Communique issued by Queensland Rail:-

Due to the damage caused by Cyclone Larry in North Queensland the QR rail network has been impacted. As of this afternoon there is no rail traffic between Townsville and Cairns until further notice.

Passenger Services
We are advising our Traveltrain passengers that the Cairns Tilt Train and the Sunlander services will be terminating at Townsville until further notice. The following services have been impacted:

Sunlander which departed Brisbane at 9am Sunday was held at Mackay overnight last night. Accommodation was arranged for passengers in Mackay and the train continued to Townsville from 9am this morning. We are currently organising alternative transport and/or accommodation for those passengers on the train who wish to travel beyond Townsville. Buses may be able to be used from tomorrow morning if the Bruce Highway is reopened tonight.

The Cairns Tilt Train which was due to depart Brisbane at 6.25pm tonight is expected to terminate at Townsville tomorrow. We have been advising passengers of the disruption and at this stage may be able to provide buses to Cairns.

The southbound Sunlander which was due to depart Cairns at 8.25am Tuesday will now commence from Townsville. We have been advising passengers of the disruption, however we are also trying to organise buses for this service.

Freight Services
There are no freight rail services running between Cairns and Townsville until further notice. Freight depots at both Tully and Innisfail have received extensive damage and are currently inoperable. A review of damaged freight stock and infrastructure will be conducted as soon as possible.

Rail Network
QR’s North Queensland communications systems have received significant damage leading to difficulties assessing the network damage. There are reports of trees across tracks and powerlines. As well as the existing damage we are also preparing for the possible impact of floodwaters which are expected to cut the North Coast line in places from this evening. QR crews have already been despatched for assessment and repair work in some locations, but it will be some time before we have an accurate assessment of the total damage.

QR has offered to assist the State Government agencies with transport needs to Townsville if required. We also have local repair crews on standby to get rail services up and running for the people of North Queensland as quickly as possible.

How are they getting on? Have services been restored yet?

I once watched the train for Townsville leaving Roma Street, but my Austrailpass only had a couple more days on it, so I couldn't take it.

Cyclone Larry - Rail Network Impact
24 March 2006

Due to the damage caused by Cyclone Larry in North Queensland, the QR rail network continues to be impacted. Essential only rail traffic is planned to resume between Townsville and Tully today, Townsville to Innisfail on Saturday and Townsville to Cairns sometime on Sunday.

For the next few days, all services between Tully and Gordonvale will be daylight running only. While the line will be safe for rail traffic, repairs to the track and infrastructure from the damage caused by the Cyclone and flooding will continue to be carried out over the coming weeks.

Rail Network

QR is asking the public to be vigilant when approaching level crossings between Townsville and Cairns with the return to operations on the rail line.

Specifically, QR wish to advise that between Tully and Gordonvale as there has been major damage to the flashing lights in this area and request that road uses take extra care when crossing the rail line at these locations.

The following level crossings between Tully and Gordonvale have been particularly identified as needing extra care from the public:
1. Old Tully Road, between Tully and Silkwood
2. Silkwood - Japoon Road, at Silkwood
3. South Johnstone Road at Boogan
4. Mayer Avenue / Innisfail Japoon Road, Wangan
5. Power Street (Danielle Street), Innisfail
6. See Poy Road, Innisfail
7. Bramston Beach Road, Mirriwinni
8. Munro Street, Babinda
9. Gordon Street, at Gordonvale
10. Norman Street, at Gordonvale

As a necessary safety measure, QR has erected stop signs at the above locations and requested assistance from local Police and Queensland Transport to help monitor road traffic compliance. We are aiming for the level crossing repairs to be progressively carried out over the coming weeks. As you will appreciate, the timing of the repairs is linked to the return of power to the areas. QR will be doing all it can to re establish the flashing lights at the level crossings as quickly as possible.

Passenger Services

We are aiming to restore normal Traveltrain services between Townsville and Cairns from Sunday afternoon. Before this time passengers will be conveyed by buses from and to Townsville to meet Traveltrain services there.

Freight Services

We will begin limited freight services between Townsville and Tully from Saturday with the aim for normal services to resume from Sunday afternoon.

Further advice will be provided in advance of QR returning to normal 24 /7.

QR would like to thank the public and our customers for their patience while we work to restore normal services as soon as possible.
