There can be a train at any time of day or night, but there tends to be a bunch in the morning before 10am and another bunch in the late afternoon through early evening.

Around CP90 is a good place to hang out. It is adjacent to lots of retail and restaurants. If the patio at Panera Bread is still open, its a good place to watch trains while you eat a sandwich. If the patio is closed, you can take a seat by the windows and still see the tracks.

There is a small yard in Kingston, but there aren't many viewpoints that aren't on private or CSX property. You can see most of the yard from the Flatbush Avenue (Route 32) crossing.

If you have more questions I can try to answer them.

If you're in Kingston on a weekend, head over to Cornell Street and check out the volunteers working on the Catskill Mountain Railroad equipment there...

That's a nice looking RS1. Does it run -- or just look good?

What's its heritage? Anyone know?

It does indeed run. CMRR 401 is ex-GMRC 401. Thought it was an original Rutland RS-1, but another roster says 401 was leased and later sold to VTR, not GMRC. Anyway, CMRR 401 has pulled work trains in the past, is scheduled to pull short passenger trains maybe later this year depending on how much trackwork is done. See also:

Earl Pardini -- now there's a name I haven't read/heard in quite a while. I should check out the RR.net articles more often. Thanks Otto.

During the day if you have time, drop in at the Trolley Museum (http://www.tmny.org) Wednesday or Thursday when the office is open. (At the moment the office isn't open on Friday's, but we may have more staff by mid-October to change that.)
