Ok-you speed freaks. I work on a slow stretch of rail---max speed 50 mph. I need a couple pictures of some speedometers in the 60"s and 70"s-----me and a couple of other Engineer buddies are gonna send it to our RFE with the caption of -------------------GUESS WHO?

Heres you pictures there CSX-Coal. Hard to hold the camara steady. :-D

Inside the Chevron Plant, just pulled in far enough where the plant guys could pull the cars off us. This is a look as i shove back out to go get on our pick up.

Worked local 3 on the 2nd of this month. Working with two protected guys. Both my grandpa's worked together on this job, they use to call them the Family. Three big motors lite power out.

Image
Waiting on short 8 to get out of the Green River yard. (WX817)

Image
Image
Stop at the top end of Bryan (830) while my conductor Ralphy hangs fred on the rear of our pick up.

Image
Headed down to the bottom end.

Image
Stopped at the bottom near the crossing.

Image
Brakemen working on getting us lined in.

Image
Better look at the switches.

Image
Pumping them up while they kick the hand brakes off.

Image
Got the 108 cars out on the main and the brakemen is running the air test in the van.

Image
Where the headend is at.

Image
Ralphy getting me lined in to head up the Stauffer Branch at mile post 834.

Image
In this picture you can see the D-rail at the bottom of the hill. Dont wanna go down that piece of track.

  by UPRR engineer

Image
Stopped near the D-rail just before we pull in.

Image
Didnt get any pictures as we went up and over the hill, figured it would still be daylight when we came back over again. Took this as we showed up at the plant. Contractors up there waiting for us so they can put the empties away.

Image
Image
We park our power in that track to the left after we cut off the cars.
Image
Those guys have to turn the crossbuck lights on (the orange box) and move the crossing gates over by hand before they can move across the crossing.

Image
Image
Moving down to grab some cars.
Image
Helper headed down in the truck to get a pin.

Image
Our silver bullet scale test car up there ahead of me. They wanted us to take it back to Green River today, we passed. Ralphy said he was gonna get it tomarrow.

Image
A look at the westend of the tipple.

Image
Here they come with the first cut. Buford Betty GP can only pull about 35 cars up the hill at a time.

Image
Plant doesnt want those guys to go over 5 mph, think when they first showed up they were running a bunch of those switches so they figured they better slow them down??

Image
Got the first sting pulled in, helper is about to tie the hand brakes the wrong way as you'll see in a minute.

Image
Image
Image

Steps on the rail and then stands on the pin lifter, and as if that aint bad enough he has both hands on the brake wheel and spins it like a steering wheel. Every time i come out here i always see something like this, drawbar jumping and not getting on and off the cars the right way.

Rearend view of the mine as i head down to the bottom as those guys go buckle.

Headend view.

Lower end of the load tracks from the runner.
Image
And another look twards the plant as i wait on those guys to finish.

Image
Odd things ive never saw before, this sticker...
Image
Image
...and this plug under the conductor desk. Must have spent some time in Canada i guess. Hot plate plug im guessing.

Image
Image
Our water and ice buckets, figured not alot of guys have saw them.

Image
Ralphy finally heading to the switch.

Kim and Ralph going over the dope one more time before i pull the first cut out.

A bunch of pictures twards knuckle hill. Last count i heard there was 65 broken knuckles up there. My grandpa said once they had there train bilt they would run up and down the hill two or three times with the motors laying sand before they would try to pull the hill.

Kinda hard on the hoghead at this crossing when its shift change at the mine, never know when those guys are gonna speed up to try to beat you.

  by UPRR engineer

Image
All done switching, time to head over. About half the train is on the hill as we leave the plant with 78 cars. With it in the 8th run think the slowest we got down to was 7mph. Brakemen told me to put it in the 7th run cause the motor started bucking and kicking, afraid we were gonna get one..."We'll be alright" Theres a dirt crossing up there dead center in the photo where the track cross the center of the picture, make it over that and your gonna be ok.
Image
Almost to the very top of the hill before we start down into the pass.
Image
Headed twards the pass.

Nice shots. Is that snow in the first one?

This is C3RS here:

They're doing it in North Platte.

Image
Threw the pass now, scary time now. Just crested the hill to start down to the mainline D-rail. General Chemical mine over there.
Image
Image
Two pics of where i finally got her shut down, bout half a car from the switch.
Image
Telaphone pole line back there is a good marker, 15mph or less and have ahold of her, and you'll be able to get her stopped, if your over 15 and it doesnt feel right, better do something else, set more air, dump it, and or get ready to jump.
Image
Dont know what the purpose of that is? Looks like an aftermarket add on.
Image
Side look at half a truck.

Thats all i took of that day, took awhile to get out and running, made it town with a few minutes to spare.

Nope soda ash, looks like snow doesnt it? When i was little looking at the Green River yard from the overpass i use to argue with my parents that it was snow not soda ash. That stuff sure is hard on the ties, cab signals, stuff under the units, and work boots.

Thanks for for telling me what that was buddy.

SolidStick flange lubrication from MPL Technologies:

http://www.mpltechnology.com/

You'll find it on all BNSF road units, and all C45ACCTE (Evo) UP units since 2005.

We're testing to see if it saves fuel and wheel wear.

  by UPRR engineer

Humm glad i took a picture of it. When i was at the pit looking things over it caught my eye.

That train turned into a run threw after we clipped the junk off the rear, didnt save any fuel from the time i jumped on it till it hit NOP. Auto start messed up on the 4000 back there, pit guy had to use a screw driver to shove the contactors up to get it to fire up, had to leave the reverser throw the whole time to keep it from killing itself.

Before we tie up buddy we have to report inspecting the units and defects and what not on the computer, (probably knew that) anyways... theres nothing in there for an autostart problem. In the interest of saving fuel, think you might wanna try to get the ball rolling to get that fixed for me buddy. Theres a section about Engine dies account of: overspeed trips, low water, ect. ect but theres nothing to report autostart so in a case like that day i have to lie and hope someone reads the comments i put in.

Nother favor buddy, can ya find a good Power Desk number for me sometime. Sometimes i think my buddies at the pit dont put those road failures in the computer for me on some of those trains i dogcatch.
