The engineer did not jump out of the train when he saw another train coming. He was already off the train before the Amtrak entered the siding. (The conductor was still on the engine and ran to the back of the engine before being thrown clear by the impact.) Maybe engineer was off loco and walking ...

The only information we have re: the dispatcher (and dispatcher communications) is during the Q&A after the 2nd press conference (it's on the NTSB channel on YT if you want to hunt it up), the question was asked "was there anything in the Dispatcher radio communications?" and the answe...

Whether or not the gates were down prior to isn't material at all in this case. If the gates are down, you do not cross the crossing, period. It's in every single state's drivers manual . In absolutely no way does a malfunctioning crossing gate put any burden on the railroad. Malfunctioning gates de...

I doubt they'd be crushed on the spot, but more likely hauled to an auto salvage yard for dismantling there. No clue on parts salvage or not. Some time back, when a car carrier ship almost capsized in the north pacific, it was full of brand new Mazdas. Most were completely undamaged ... but ... ever...

Poor management ...

When you let someone go with that kind of administrative access, you remove that access BEFORE you tell them they're let go.

switches only have targets in manual block, and yards, switches in signal territory do not have targets. Watch the NTSB "B-roll" of the investigators looking over the scene of the accident. Right at the 2:00 mark, they're walking north-to-south on the mainline. They walk right past the po...

So in this territory, Amtrak follows the csx rulebook? And the csx rules do not require approaching switches prepared to stop when signals are inoperative (dcs)? Presuming that is the case, I do not see how this anything but a 100% CSX screw up. Correct on both your questions, but there are still 3...

Apparently a switch left locked lining a train into an occupied siding? A signal suspension in place that removed any alert from the signalling system (restricting signals into that block) that would have warned the engineer? One rule that was apparently not broken was the speed (unless MAS was slo...

Some important info clarified at NTSB presser tonight. 1) The CSX crew indeed did release their authority over the track back to the dispatcher. 2) The Amtrak train was not speeding and the EDR indicated that emergency braking was executed before the collision. This certainly suggests that the CSX ...

Wouldn't they have left the lock off or have left the shackle in place ,but not locked, knowing that as soon as their train had cleared the switch once into the siding that they would have had to throw it back to it's normal position and then lock it? Rules forbid this. Anytime you move the switch,...

This sounds a lot like that other South Carolina accident about 10 years ago, where a mainline freight went into a siding left open, rupturing some chemical tanks in the siding and leading to the death of about 10 people. Also CSX IIRC. (I apologize if this was noted already earlier in the thread a...

At any rate, the "malfunction" being noted is that the gates were down (note: this is the failsafe position), perhaps when no train was coming. This does not absolve the road vehicle of blame in any way. Every single drivers manual in the nation clearly states, gates down = do not cross. P...

Isn't the default position for a crossing gate with no power, the lowered position?

(ie: default to the most protective/safe condition)

All -- consider the length of time/distance it takes a train at speed to stop ...

The crossing you see in those photos with the cab of the truck is probably (in fact almost assuredly is) not the crossing where the accident occurred ... you'd have to backtrack for the actual impact point.
