Re: Fifty Years of Amtrak: Your best memories

The mention of timetables reminded me of A-day May 1 1971. A bunch of us railfans at school in "the Leaky Valley" Bethlehem PA coincidentally were planning a trip that day which was Saturday down to Philly. The only question was, would the Reading RDC to Philly still be running or would it...

It will be interesting to see what happens when 448/449 are restored as of June 18th.

Why that seems so impossible for a railroad to accomplish is boggling. Go look at old timetables, and you'll see freight running on schedules prior to the 1960's, but 40 and 50 years later, it's impossible? That's inexplicable. In the old days it was out of necessity because most railroads ran by t...

Thinking about dining cars and restricting them to sleeper only vs. allowing coach passengers. For now let's just look at the Superliners as traditional dining will be on those trains only. A Superliner sleeper has 14 roomettes, 5 bedrooms, an accessible bedroom and a family bedroom. If it were maxe...

Just curious - never heard the term "Lexus Lanes" before. What is it? Sounds like maybe additional lanes you have to pay extra to use? Here in New England we have HOV lanes, but as far as I know cars of any pedigree (even a beat up VW bus) could use them as long as it contains the requisit...

Of course for a short period around 1990 Amtrak operated from Atlantic City to Philadelphia Airport as part of a deal with Midway Airlines which ended after Midway went belly up. I imagine they would have had similar issues with crossing over that train at PHIL The ACY service never met expectations...

Looking at the new long distance train menu, not bad. Glad to see they now serve a decent Chardonnay (Kendall Jackson) instead of the dreaded Barefoot, which hardly makes good mouthwash.

There's 2 or 3 Concord busses to Bangor via I-95 and one via Rt 1 (2 in summer), and I think Greyhound has one bus to Bangor. There's only one bus continuing north of Bangor to Aroostook County, and perhaps one bus east of Bangor (I'm not really sure about that one). No busses that branch off of I-...

I was curious to see how the Western routes are doing performance wise. I found a DOT report showing 1Q 2021 results for end point OTP: California Zephyr 81.0% Southwest Chief 55.4% Empire Builder 81.0% Coast Starlight 84.8% Texas Eagle 81.1% Source: https://railroads.dot.gov/sites/fra.dot.gov/files...

I don't think there's enough demand that would warrant sending trains further into Maine. Has anyone done some sort of a sondage to determine such? In a case, taking a page from California's playbook might be in order: set up a Thruway service to feed the train, one from Bangor via Augusta, another...

The thing about the airport "2 hour wait" normally being shorter is that when planning when to leave for the airport you have to factor in a worst case situation which could be 2 hours. Just because 90% of the time it is 15 to 30 minutes, you still have to allow for that 10% possibility. U...

There is a fly in the ointment concerning cruises such as to Alaska. Due to the Jones Act, cruise lines usually called at a Canadian port if their origin and destination were in the US. Currently Canada has banned cruise ships until 2022 so unless the government waives the Jones Act provision, there...

Seems bizarre to me that they don't allow coach passengers to buy dining car meals. Even if it was pre-order so that they would know how many meals to stock in advance. You have all that fixed cost of running the dining facilities, seems like it would make sense trying to get as much revenue as poss...
