the red line uses 2-3 work trains each week night (sun - thurs).
The 4442 work train is a work car.
the 4449 work train is a 4 car 1400 train with a flat on the end.
the 0578 work train is made of passengerr cars fitted with the flat.

I certianly dont remember them because I was only 5 at the time and lived(I still do) in Malden. But from what I hear it sounds like they were both likable and dislikable. Can anyone provide a photo of the interior?

On a recent trip (a few weeks ago) to the Seashore Trolley Museum, I saw 01450/55 sitting at that track it's been sitting on for a while. I couldn't get too close to them, but I got them on my videotape, and I also saw that 01450's window (after the left revenue door) was smashed out, not completely, but a 7-inch diameter hole in that window. However, the rest of the units were fine, and the museum officials told me they were gonna fix them up and add overhead wiring devices since they'll be running them, so I was glad to see them sitting in fine condition.

sorry I missed meeting you, did you talk to bill pullman?

You couldn't get close enough to them, yet you got close enough to see that the hole was 7" in diameter?!? :P

No, I went on Sat, Sep 03, I doubt he was there, and I didn't even ask...

These are the 01400 pre-1993/93 disposition list. These were the 8 cars sent to the recycle bin prior to 1994:

01409-wrecked, caught fire in 1975
01410-same as '09
01427-involved in serious wreck (possibly with 01604/045??)
01490-unknown date/wreck casualty
01408*
01476*
01440#
01487#

*these units were involved in a yard mishap in the early 80s, most likely never returned to service after then.

#these two coaches were remated and shortly after rehab, these two were allowed to sit and rot at Cabot until 1988-89, when they were taken away.

Any corrections, however, are welcome.

Anybody know what happened to the 01491? I remember that one as having the different design on the front.

I thought one of the cars with the different front end went to Seashore, but their collection list on the web only lists 01450 and 01455

That's right, both 01450/55 are the straight end, and 01469/80, 01470/77 are not slants either. Sorry to say, but 01491 was scrapped sometime in '95 after the 12DEC94 last public passenger trip.

According to Scott Moore (or RTSPCC):

01488 got into an accident with 01476.

01429 was not damaged, but since it was paired to 01408 at the time, that car was stored also.

Miscellaneous: 01459 and 01485 (the survivors from that 01476 and 01488 accident) were mated together as a pair.

I saw a picture of 01461 in a book, which was dated around 1989-91.

I am presuming that 01458 was paired with 01461 in those two cars' final years of service. Were those two cars retired early (that is, used for parts only) after around 1990-1991?

I think 01461 may have lasted until '94 or so as with 01458.

Well, you won't want to believe this but while I was on board MBCR Franklin Train 799 (25) after 4:30 PM, I glanced aver at Cabot like I always do, and sure enough, I saw the 01400 trainset relocated. That's not all, when our train moving, I felt thru my eyes as if the 01400s were moving and they were indeed moving with a flatcar attached to the back, and they were moving at around 10mph (same speed as 799 while going through the Yards). This is something, since I haven't seen the 01400s actually move since they took passengers, I know they moved around in the past years, but I never saw them in motion since '94 till now.

Robert, as mentioned earlier in the thread, that 4 car set is used for work train service at night. If you are down there around 100am or so you'd see them head out of Cabot Yard towards "Malfunction Junction".
