I saw a YouTube video of a pantograph on a train somewhere in Europe getting snagged and then subsequently destroying itself and ripping down a good bit of catenary...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XgCPPeYmyKw

It was taken from a camera mounted on the roof of the locomotive or M.U. (equipment type is unknown).

The destruction begins about 2 seconds into the video when the pan snags a catenary support bracket. And check out the speed indicator at the bottom of the screen....the train is moving at 120kph and it isn't till things really start shaking that it gets stopped quickly, likely when the power finally went out.

Anybody here ever been on a train when the pantograph decided to take down the wire? Definitely not a pleasant sound....

That video is one of two video's, this is one with a ICE without carbon strip protection.
The other a ICE with a hollow carbon strip which trips the pantograph as soon as carbon wears or gets damaged.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HRgzeNOXRyg hit takes place at =/- 35 seconds
both test were done deliberatly on the high speed test loop in Germany.
The hollow carbion strips are used on ACELA and HHP-8 and will be used on new MNCR/CDOT M-8's
