Gentle Forum Members,
The LIONEL layout exhibit was developed and under way long before we were offered the simulator shell. Even if the building had not already been restored for the model train layout, the roof would have had to have been literally torn off to allow the 9'8" tall cab to get inside. All of our doors are only 7' high and the old collar ties were about 8'6" high !
The simulator shell is weather tight and aluminum doesn't rust. One day, when we have the facilities, the simulator can move inside. Until then she will be an outdoor interactive exhibit and we will have to wax her periodically.
Chris, the unit had been stripped of all LIRR technology before being excessed by the Company. It is an empty shell. The machine's mechanics and visual components were repurposed with the new LIRR simulators. There is no control or air brake stand inside her. I've made calls to some associates in the business and am hoping some spare parts may become available from across the country. Dumpster diving if you know what I mean!! Ha, Ha! If not, we will build a similar layout from scratch.
This will be a multi-month project with a planned completion date of the 2011 Riverhead Railroad Festival. First order of business is to run a long planned electric service panel to the simulator and C-68. Final testing of the computer, RailDriver Desktop Cab Controller and software come next. Finally, installation of a 12 volt air compressor, air horn, manual locomotive bell and a scanner for LIRR frequencies will round out the installation.
Do plan to come play next summer! Thanks for the positive commentary all!
