Great job on the Jordan Spreader Twin Forks-
News from OBRM-
Today was a really cold morning that saw a minmal amount of volunteers show up.
It also marked the last regularly scheduled work session for the volunteers.
We were finally able to locate the missing grease cellar parts for the #6 drive wheel bearing box.
Unfortunately, after installing the parts we weren't able to fit the inner box totally inside the outer box, so we wrapped up the unit and left it for later.
Next week is our annual Holiday Express weekend at OBRM.
We will be hosting Heather Worthington , the author of "Miles of Smiles"-the story of Roxey the LIRR dog.
We will also have a real live ROXEY on hand for the kids to play with.
WE are sponsoring the carriage rides through town and will also be having our chinese auction and will be serving hot cider & cookies and on Sunday we will have a visit from Santa himself!
We will be open 12-4 both days.
Happy Holidays to all from..............

Are there plans to protect the simulator from the elements? Or will it just rust away to a point of uselessness?

President Fisher said it best so I'll just copy what he said :D

Yes, we will be keeping the simulator outside. The shell is aluminum and the paint and weatherstripping are in excellent shape from being inside at the training facility. We have no place large enough to put the shell inside. We will keep it waxed and cleaned to prolong the paintwork and detail it as necessary.

Why in gods name is this not going inside the building? This will get Destroyed out there!

Maybe a canopy should be built atleast? I know you have good intentions for it, but it can't just be left outside all year with absolutely no protection from mother nature.

Probably no room in there with the Lionel display. What about a tent?

As usual, Toys take priority inside.

Gentle Forum Members,

The LIONEL layout exhibit was developed and under way long before we were offered the simulator shell. Even if the building had not already been restored for the model train layout, the roof would have had to have been literally torn off to allow the 9'8" tall cab to get inside. All of our doors are only 7' high and the old collar ties were about 8'6" high !

The simulator shell is weather tight and aluminum doesn't rust. One day, when we have the facilities, the simulator can move inside. Until then she will be an outdoor interactive exhibit and we will have to wax her periodically.

Chris, the unit had been stripped of all LIRR technology before being excessed by the Company. It is an empty shell. The machine's mechanics and visual components were repurposed with the new LIRR simulators. There is no control or air brake stand inside her. I've made calls to some associates in the business and am hoping some spare parts may become available from across the country. Dumpster diving if you know what I mean!! Ha, Ha! If not, we will build a similar layout from scratch.

This will be a multi-month project with a planned completion date of the 2011 Riverhead Railroad Festival. First order of business is to run a long planned electric service panel to the simulator and C-68. Final testing of the computer, RailDriver Desktop Cab Controller and software come next. Finally, installation of a 12 volt air compressor, air horn, manual locomotive bell and a scanner for LIRR frequencies will round out the installation.

Do plan to come play next summer! Thanks for the positive commentary all!

Thanks Otto! Those heads are a long story, haha! But Northport seems to be enjoying the exhibit, being well received by the community.

Morning Folks,

It may be snowing in Riverhead, but that is not stopping us from working at the museum. A lot of work is getting done this winter! Check out the blog for more info!
