How much does it cost to lease a locomotive? I know it probably varies but how much to lease like a gp38 or similar? Who pays to move the loco from where it sits to the place that will lease it? Just curious about the lease process and how it works.

Also who pays repairs?

Believe Helm charges around $800 to $1000 per day for a SD40-2, transportation cost would be by leasor, the least does not start till unit arrives at lease location.
daily servicing and daily wear items would be payed for by leasing railroad, bigger repairs are by leasing company.

Dutch, that sounds a little steep. Now the market has probably rebounded somewhat, but lessors were leasing geeps and SDs in the $2-300/day range not too long ago.

Apparently you can buy an SD40-2 for as little as $100K. If a railroad expects to need such a unit for more than a year, an outright purchase is probably something they'd seriously consider.

Leases are business agreements. They have to make sense to both sides of the agreement.

If a company is leasing a fleet, as ATSF did with GE immediately ahead of the BNSF merger, that agreement came "soup to nuts." Everything but fuel, lubricants and enroute inspections was part of the deal as I recall. MODERATOR'S NOTE: Railroad.net does not endorse or make representation on any of the firms below. I own locomotives and trackmobiles and in 2005 - 2207 I used to lease a U23B to a RR in north Jersey / New York State for $1800 a month. They were responsible for all maintenance and repair during the term of the lease. Lease lasted 24.5 months.

I have heard of other leases for locos within industrial switching applications being in the $2500 - $3000 range. It can also be higher or lower depending on a variety of factors.

Also the type of loco can factor into the lease cost. In my opinion with my experience in this industry an SD40-2 / GP40-2 / GE 100 tonner / GP10 / SW1200 (with upgraded power assemblies) COULD pull in more $$$ then a U Boat / Alco / and older first gen units. It comes down to fuel economy, familiarity with type of mechanical repair, maintenance costs, reliability, horsepower, options, Kim Hot Start, Remote Control, etc....
