It's pretty clear that Joliet won't be enjoying the revival of the steel industry like Gary has. However, I was under the impression that the Joliet mill was a integrated mill w/ blast furnaces, but the google earth pics only show warehouses, but not blast furnaces - how much was torn out over the last few years?

The old Joliet Mill is now a nature preserve maintained by the Will County Forest Preserve District. If you are in the area, you should definitely visit and hike the trails.
Joliet definitely DID HAVE blast furnaces.

Thanks for the info - was it connected to the unused facility still standing to the west of Collins ave, south of the Prison? (where someone stored F40PH's)
edit: looking at the Will County preserve site http://www.fpdwc.org/preserves.cfm
I notice there is a preserve at the former Joliet Iron Works, but this appears to be on property dismantled in 1930's, and I think USS shut down in Joliet much later than that.
