Similarly, the US importing oil doesn't make much sense to me either.

But the number of coal burning power stations reduces constantly as they are closed. Wind power now is greater than coal power - that is more kwh.

We actually reactivate coal (and gas) burning plants in Germany. Mostly as peak reserves.
