Is the "Dead Line" the "its all over for you" line, or just "not working right now" line?

1116 was not on the BET 'dead line' this morning so it may be inside the shop.

I believe the area is used for engines in need of MAJOR repair. Depending on available funds and the reliability of the other locomotives, they are repaired. The 2 F40s have been there for a very substantial period of time (years at this point).
Note that 1921 is also in that group and as I understand things, it has been retired.
I am sure Dave can provide a better answer to the uses of that area of the BET.

Was the 1067 on train #632 the other night? Heard that #632 broke down somewhere between Forest Hills & Back Bay. :(
