I saw Breda Rehabs 3193 & 3218 paired with each other yesterday on the Green line and today on the Red line. With the exception of cars 3290-3291, this is the first time I’ve ever noticed cars in service that weren’t paired with their original partners.

Does anyone know why 3193 & 3218 are now a pair, or what happened to 3192 & 3219? Are they a pair now also, or were their rehabs not fully successful?

Maybe 192 and 3219 could have been wrecked and scrapped, I know that several 3k cars have been seriously wrecked and never rturning to service.

The dogged car is sitting in West Falls Church for loss of speed commands. Why not double belly it.

I think 18 derailed with the 5k that is sitting in branch ave yard. It was condemed and the other dog train had electrical for to the ka box cause improper coupling at a curve at new carroltton.

The cars that were in the train that derailed in the Mount Vernon Square wreck were:
5024-25
5185-84
5152-53

5152 was the car that was damaged. This is said car photographed by Mike Morris on 10 04 2007 sitting in Branch Avenue Yard.

They did a pretty nice job tarping up the front of the 5152......except for a little hole in the bottom thus exposing the wrecked lower left corner of the "phantom left side cab" 5152, literally, is now a half cab car :-D like the R32s of the NYCTA

I wrote Metro regarding our mismatched set, and here's what I got back:

Thank you for taking the time to write to us. The mates to these cars are still at the Contractor for heavy repairs. During a contracted rehab for all 2000 and 3000-series cars, problems were found with 3192 and 3219 which caused considerable delays. A decision was made to send their mating cars back, and we have married them and put them in to service until the mates are delivered. That should happen soon. Once accepted, they will be put back with the proper mating car.

So there you go. Your guess is as good as mine as to what the problems were.

Why not just leave the cars mismatched permanently?

I agree, they do that uphere in Boston with the Red Line and a now-retired pair on the Blue Line, For example, an odd couple was 0624/0627 and 0145/01455, 01469/01470, 01477/01480, which were permanently mismated

0624 was originally mated with 0625
01450 was with 01451
01477 was mated to 01476
01480 was originally with 01481 (which by the way was ultimately mated at the time of retirement with 01452)
01469 was with 01468
01470 was with 01471

(on a side note, my MBTA 01400s were apparantely mismated a few years after their initial criticallity/activation in 1963 while all newer MBTA Red Line car Orders are still mated properly to these days)

And in WMATA they should have 3193 and 218 together, and I remember 3290/91 which was renumbered from other numbers after their Original mates were wrecked in Shady Grove in 1996, these should have kept their original numbers too, like they do here in Bostton as I mentioned

Saw 3218 on the Red Line this morning, and it appears that the cars have been reunited with their correct mates, as 3219 was right next to it, blind end to blind end. No idea what was wrong with 3219, because it looked normal as anything, but based on the brightness of the lighting, it appeared to have come back fairly recently.

Oh good, now I wonder what's up with 3193? Who will 3193 be paired up with unless it'll be a single unit

The MBTA's 01400s suffered three fires and a wreck splitting 4 pairs:

01408-09
01410-11
01426-27
and
01490-91

91408 and 01411 were mated, but the other two had different controls and started a series of remates as cars broke down and were repaired, thus the long term oddball matings. Eventually a GE was rebuilt into a Westinghouse to solve the problem and get all 88 remaining cars running, but the mismates were never corrected.

09, 10, 27 and 90 were scrapped before the rebuild.

01605 was never restored to service after the wreck, so the 01600s remained as originally mated. It is also interesting that the 01500s were randomly mixed until rebuilt, but were then mated as even-odd pairs. Today reliable six-car trains are seldom broken up.

I don't know if 3192's back on the property yet or not - I haven't had a sighting of it, nor have I seen any single cars other than the ones we know about (1028, 1076). WMATA indicated that 3192 will be returning to service, but I've not spotted it, nor have I heard of anyone else spotting it.

Well Rohr's 1028 & 1076 are not likely to return to service since they wrecked banged up a bit but may be used as parts source

They will likely be scraped in 8 years when the last of 300 7k that will replace the 1k cars are excepted from the manufacture. WMATA may preserve selected 1k cars that are in the best shape for non revenue use.

128 cars Prototype and Serial Production: 2nd quarter 2012 > 2nd quarter 2014.
130 cars Growth Phase I: 2nd quarter 2014 > 2nd quarter 2016.
300 cars Fleet Enhancement: 2nd quarter 2016 > 4th quarter 2016. (1k car replacements)
90 cars Growth Phase II: 3rd 4th quarter 2016 > quarter 2017.

100 4k cars Mid Life Rehabilitation: 2nd quarter 2014 > 3rd quarter 2016.
