At about 8:30AM, a westbound school bus approached the Sheldon Rd. xg of the NYC mainline. The xg was 6 tracks and had no active warning devices. The weather was clear and bright, and there were no obstructions to the sight lines for the bus driver.

The bus stopped at the crossing as Train #7 (1 locomotive and 10 cars) was passing on Tk. 3. After #7 cleared, the bus started across the tracks and was struck by Train #X-19 (Engine 3340 & 6 cars) which was moving at about 55 mph.

The Bus was demolished, and the driver and 9 of the 10 students aboard were killed. The engine crew of #X-19 did not see the bus before the collision as the fireman was working on the fire and the engineer's view was obscured by the boiler. Their first awareness came as they saw school books on the pilot.

Memorial Elementary School of the Berea School District was named to commemorate the victims.

Obviously there was an obstruction in the sight lines for the bus driver, namely No. 7.

What they mean is there were no geographical obstructions like a hillside, a building or excessive vegetation. If the driver had waited for a clear view after #7 passed, he would have had a clear sight of X-19.

Actually, Train #7 did not obstruct the view of Train X-19 as #7 was on Tk. 3 while X-19 (also westbound) was about 1/2-mile behind #7 but on Tk. #1 which was closer to the bus.

That makes it all the more avoidable. Image

Report says it's possible blowing snow after the first train passed was a factor.
