Along a couple of former New Haven branches I've seen a trackside post similar to a concrete whistle post but with a letter A in place of a W . Does anyone know what it signified ?

A posts are approach/activation points for grade crossing protection.
There are also R posts, which signify the engineer should continue ringing the bell because of either an upcoming crossing or station area.

"A" Posts were used on various sidings and industrial spurs that were on a grade and they directed the crew to have the air brakes connected and operaable on on all moves taking place on such tracks. In this case a brake test was also required to insure that the air was going through the entire cut of cars. Years ago on the New Haven Railroad these signs were very common all over the place. We had a lot of tracks on grades that were very active.
