If you want to get a good idea of how it looked in the mid 20th century, rent the movie "Stealing Home".

The kid in the movie grew up in Chestnut Hill, and there are a lot of shots of him riding Penn Central commuter trains to his home, and in Trenton. His parents would pick him up at Highland Station.

Lot of vintage footage of the Jersey Shore too.
