in a event of a power outage in the metro where are the emergency lights located and is there an alarm as well to alert this condition also how is the emergency back up system on the metro differs from the new york subway when a power failure occurs?

25 precent of all of the lights are connect to a battery back up. That includes the station and tunnel lights. In the event of a power interruption from the electric utility the battery backup will automatically kick in and supply power to those lights for roughly three hours. Escalators and elevators are not connect to the battery backup system. Selected stations have diesel generators to power escalators and elevators.

Traction power substation are configured such that in the event of a power interruption from the electric utility power to one or more substations the third rail will get power from adjacent substations. Traction power substation are spaced at roughly 6,000’ (1828m) Mind you if three or more traction power substations in a row are dead voltage drops will reduce train performance.

Most stations in subway have two AC switch board rooms giving these station four feeds form electric utility. The two separate AC switch board rooms within a station have a tie breaker between them to allow power to pass from one AC switch board rooms to the other in the event that power feeds to one of the AC switch board rooms is interrupted.

All AC switch board rooms have battery back ups in them. Some traction power substation have AC switch board rooms in them to supply power to tunnel lighting and other power loads that are not fed from station AC switch board rooms.

Fault alarms will be sent to central control in the event of a loss of power from electric utility to both traction power substation and AC switch board rooms.

All points where electric power enter a metrorail faculty be it a traction power substation or an AC switch board room in a station has two separate power feeds, in some installations these power feeds come from different electric utility substations.

Most traction power substation and AC switch board rooms are fed at 13.8kv.
