Can anyone recommend good books, articles, or websites on how LA stopped having electric rail transit in the middle of the 20th century? A student in my urban history course is doing some research on the topic and she's having trouble finding much in library catalogs and journal databases. That might be because we're in Indiana. Some of this is in the general books and articles about the trolley-to-bus-conversion in the US as a whole, the idea of a GM conspiracy, etc., but we're looking for stuff specific to LA. I will be grateful for any suggestions. (I scanned the headings of the form and didn't see any that looked like someone asked the same question; if I missed it, I'm sorry.)
By the way, Zachary Schrag's article "The Bus is Young and Honest" (about the end of trolleys in NYC), is interesting in itself and has a good list of publications arguing about just why trolleys mostly got bustituted. You'd need access to an academic article database to get it, I think, but if you're interested it's worth tracking it down.
