Does anybody have an up to date count on how many locomotives are stored on the Union Pacific now? The number has got to be increasing. Railcar loadings on many raw materials and heavy industrial products are off between 15 percent and 30 percent from the same time last year, depending on category. It looks like a substantial reduction in rail traffic is underway. :(

There's a long line (about 25-30 or so) of older ex-CNW GE Dash 8 units on the storage track at Proviso. They've been there several months, not sure if they're for sale, or what...

Thanks very much for the information. That number (1000 units stored) looks very consistent with the decline in business forecast by the rapidly declining railcar loadings.

This is worse than the recession of the 1980's! In 1982 (the peak of the recession), 650 units were stored, but we must remember that was ONLY UP. Now UP is a much larger railroad with more locomotives, so adjusted for the number of locomotive that it has today, it's around the same percentage. When the recession was over, UP didn't just survive, it thrived! People should begin to put the recession into place. Adjusted for inflation, it's around the same as the 1980's recession.

The CNW 8500's were going back to the lessor at the beginning of '07. They would be now UP 90xx series. A crowd of locos are stored at Janesville as well. We had some Dash 9's and SD60's hanging around protecting plow extras, but they are also going to storage somewhere. There are only a handful of SD40-2's left active, a number of them stored in Janesville. They have been gone long ago from the local manifests in favor of C44AC's and SD70M's. All grain has been C44AC's, same with unit ethanol. (those GEVO's look sharp on the empty grainers with all new hoppers {CHTT types})

There's about 25 or 30 at Settegast Yard, 45 or so at Englewood Yard in Houston. There were a load of them in Spring but I think they moved them after someone stole a lot of the whistles. Just a guess on the numbers but there's a bunch. I had to dig some out the other night and when I cut the air in I heard a loud blowing sound. Someone robbed the entire air assembly from the engineer's console in one (I'm sure it was someone from the roundhouse).

There is a ton of power in Colton/Bloomington yard in CA. I drove by there yesterday and lost count after 100 units. I used to work for the SPRR and then the UPRR. Truely wierd sight.

Anyone have a total count of the engines stacked up in CA? Just curious.
