Well it is that time of year again where we offer a ride on a railroad speeder to the railfan community at large over the NYS&W Southern Division in return for a little help.....

I am a member and one of the trip organizers of the Volunteer Railroaders Association. We set up speeder trips on the NYS&W in NJ and NY. Last year we held runs on the Utica, Syracuse and Southern Divisions of the NYS&W.

In the past we have solicited the railfan community to join us and help flag crossings in exchange for a ride on the cars. If you are able to follow along in your vehicle and flag crossing one day, you ride for free on the motorcars the other day. The day you flag crossings, we pay for your lunch. It has always worked out well. Several fans on this list have helped on these trips. This year we are making that offer again!

June 27th and 28th we will be running the entire Southern Division of the NYS&W. Saturday we run roundtrip from Riverdale, NJ to Pelton Road (Warwick, NY) and Sunday we will be running roundtrip from Riverdale east to Ridgefield Park and hopefully North Bergen.

On September 12th we are running the Syracuse Branch and September 13th the Utica Branch. Day one will begin in Cortland, NY from the Suit Cote facility. We are running Saturday from Cortland south to the NYS&W Binghamton Yard and return. We are also planning a first ever Saturday - dusk / evening run north from Cortland to ??? for the hardcore speeder operators. On Sunday we will run from Sangerfield north ot Utica and return then south to Sherburne and return to the set on point.

These two trips have been fully approved by the NYS&W and insured through NARCOA's national insurance policy. If you chose to help us you must sign a release form and you must be over 18 years old (railroad's requirement).

To sign up with your offer to help, you can email the VRA at [email protected]

Or email me directly at [email protected]

More information on the trips can be found here:

My daughter said she saw something odd at the State Rd crossing in Binghamton. She said there were a group of people walking or standing on the tracks with some "golfcart" like vehicles on the tracks.....she was driving by and didn't really get a good look.
Could it have been a Doodlebug get together? How about some pictures!!
thanks.

Generally, a "doodle bug" is either a RDC (Budd Car), http://www.budd-rdc.org/ or EMC gas car. http://abpr.railfan.net/abprphoto.cgi?m ... CXO-53.jpg A passenger car that can move on its own without a separate locomotive.

I think what you are referring to is generally called a "speeder" which is a track maintenance car, (also known as railroad motor car, crew car, putt putt, gang car) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speeder and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-LJrzLH13pg

Actually,

The Volunteer Railroaders Association ran a 2 day trip over the Syracuse and Utica Branches this past weekend. On Saturday we ran the Syracuse Branch from Cortland south to Binghamton and return then back north to Tully at night and return....We were around State Road in the 1-2 pm time frame, Saturday.

On Sunday we ran from Sherburne north to Utica and return.

About 15 speeders and one hyrail truck each day. We did well over 200 track miles in the two days.

I am one of the event coordinators for the VRA and had my newly acquired Fairmont M-19 for it maiden run.

Al,

You missed it, we ran the Utica Branch this past Sunday (Sept 13th)!

Sorry I didn't post it to the list, been busy on a bunch of projects....

However, we will be running the Stourbridge Railroad from Honesdale to Lackawaxen on October 4th...

We ran the Syracuse Branch on Saturday (9/12) and the Utica on Sunday (9/13). So we are done with trips on the ND this year.
