Question about Horns

Post by diburning » Sun Mar 21, 2010 11:37 am

Hello, I am trying to model NS 1643 (a former NW unit). Which horn does the real thing have? It looks really weird.

There's nothing too strange about the horn on 1643 - it's a Nathan P5L, which is extremely common on the NS.

If you're looking for info on the 1643, there are more than 20 photos of it at rrpicturearchives.net:

That horn is a "New Cast" 3rd generation P5. It sits on a low-mount manifold. Sometimes refereed to as a P5L.

Do some of the former N&W units still have those melodious Leslie S-5's (I call them French horns)? Back when the rr was still N&W I heard quite a few and the railroad kept them pretty clean - better sounding than most of the French Horns on the former SCL.
