Summer of 2002, first summer of the CN takeover, as I was waiting for a track to clear up so I could leave Fon Du Lac with my train, I saw a southbounder grab about 15 dead WC units to go to Woodcrest. That was spooky. Everybody in the yard stopped what they were doing to watch them go, a reminder that a change had come.
Why not just sell them off to shortlines or Mexico? I understand they probably have a more limited resale market than a geep, but somebody would buy them. Maybe Indiana Railroad after their big buy.
CN is a well-run organization, so I'm going to assume that they wouldn't be selling useable locomotives for scrap when they could potentially make more money selling them to other operators. More likely is the probability that the units suffered a major failure and were then cannibalized to keep the remaining SD45's running.
Not only is CN getting rid of the SD45s, they are now getting rid of the SD40s. There were several GTW SD40s as well as all three of the remaining DWPs all in the deadline at Homewood along with 2 GMD1s, some GTW GP9Rs, WC SD40 6001, and a whole bunch of WC SD45s. Seems CN is doing some spring cleaning. Several SD45s have already been scrapped.
I know there were 3 DWP painted SD40s still running. There were also a few GTW and CN SD40s still running. All 3 DWP SD40s, and at least a few CN and GTW SD40s were stored along with too many WCs to list. I went by Homewood last Thursday.
Well at least one SD45 is still running. Second unit on CSX west bound near Palmyra, NY WC 6529 looking good; sounding strong albeit missing the cab heralds so maybe it's in a lease pool now even though the one CN roster I checked still has it listed. Anyway great to see these units in any color scheme.
I went back to Homewood last Sunday and there are even more WC SD45s stored in three different deadlines. Some engine numbers were 6620, 7581, 7500, 7518 and too many others to list. GTW SD40 5922, CN (GT) SD40 5900, and DWP SD40s 5905, 5908, and 5911 were also in deadlne in addition to CN GMD1s 1414 and 1443.
why would CN ship all the junkers from Canada to the States for scraping?
GMD1 units as fas i know never ran in the States. Better deals down there or just more storage?
CN is starting to scrap the SD40s. WC 6001, DWP 5908 and 5911, and CN (GT) 5900 have been scrapped so far. DWP 5905 is one of the next engines awaiting the scrapper. That explains why the SD40s were disappearing from the deadline.
