I remember reading an article stating how #42 Joseph H. Boardman was placed at Beech Grove as a training unit for shop staff, yet recently there have been multiple reports of this engine leading or trailing various Amtrak trains. Does anyone know when and why 42 is now in service and is no longer a shops unit?

P-42 #42 honors the miltary service as does ACS=64 642 and a NPCU in Ca.
There're other deadline units at Beech Grove to be used as training stands.
Soon the SC44LD Chargers will be online. All the P40/42's are about worn out.

42 trailed on 91(21) it's been out and about in the "DC diesel pool*" often riding the Capitol Limited west, then east and then getting sent south for it's next run. It had been restricted to trailing but I've heard some rumblings of upgrades to cab equipment or PTC equipment to restore lead status.

*=if there is such a thing.
