Know so, as I were "around those parts" (77th & Lex) during early '60's. The best innovation those cars had were padded foam seats with a vinyl covering - a step up from the Rattan from earlier times.
If all details are correct, those were R17s on the 6 (built by St. Louis 1955), oriignaly maroon. Later replaced with hard fiberglass benches (baseball dugout type).

Not all Gunn Red cars had the same original livery. The World's Fair cars on the 7 (delivered late 1963/1964 for the World's Fair) had a striking two-tone turquoise with large picture windows and were called "Blue Arrows". The Main Line R33/R36 cars on the 1/2/3/4/5/6 lines delivered between 1963 and early 1965 were bright red and had conventional (drop sash) windows.
