It's a plow, silly.

That was an easy one.

It was originally a Milwaukee Road steam engine tender (or maybe even from a MILW predecessor). MILW made it into a plow and filled it with crushed rock and sand for added weight. You will find identical plows on ONCT and OMID. Ontario Lines bought 3 plows and a flanger from MILW back in the 1980's. That one was subsequently sold to LA&L.

Thank a bunch...now its time to figure out how to build one 1/87th its original size...

(HO Scale kitbash/kitmashing to commence soon.)

The CNW had a plow very similar to the LA&L plow. It was at Belle Fourche, SD. They probably had many others. The Rock Island had a plow that was converted from a vanderbilt tender stationed at Limon, CO and no doubt many others. Seemed to be a fairly common conversion, at least in the west.

I dont think Luther meant to ask "classification" but instead "heritage." Thank you BR&P for the info.

Luther, I bet you could find the parts for your project at any train show. Find a steam engine tender, find a wedge snow plow, and combine the two. That's what the prototype did.

This plow is fairly common at many train shows:

Athearn makes a steam tender in HO, but you could also get away with a cheaper version as well:

Good luck!
