whats the current count?
I just put this list together on another forum.
I know its not totally accurate..
who has corrections?

Livonia, Avon & Lakeville
(including B&H, OC and WNY&P)

15 operating, plus 6 stored, awaitng shop work and return to service.

source - http://24.93.10.61/rochesterrailf/lal.htm

Susquehanna - running 5 of the Cartier 6-axle units.
remaining 3 still OOS in cohocton.

Falls road - operating RS11 and C420 (lockport)

DLWR - 1 operating RS18 - batavia

Buffalo southern - 5 operating and 7 stored.

MHWA - 3 Centuries. (utica)

Adirondack - 3 operating (RS3, C424 and one in Rome)

RGVRRM - 3 operating (museum)

NYLE - 3 operating, 5 stored (Gowanda & hamburg)

catskill - 2 operating RS3's.

3 stored dead at Colonie.
2 stored dead south albany

upper hudson - 2 operating

Owego - 1 (maybe 2) stored MLW.

I think thats about everything!
some data is likely outdated, but the count is close..
so thats 44 operating alcos, and 27 stored.
making a total of 71 alcos in New York!

(and I think I have seen just about all of them!)

Ontario Midland has an RS11, an RS36, and 2 switchers - not sure if they're S2's or S4's or one of each.

The power plant near Solvay has an S6 or maybe more.

How about Battenkill?

There is a derelict S2 sitting on the Arcade & Attica - NS interchange

And there are some, unsure how many, at Buffalo owned by WNYRRHS or such.

Bet there's even more, but there's a start.

Add to the list:

Ontario Midland

S-4 #3 operating
RS-36 #408 operating
RS-11 #36 stored at LA&L Lakeville shops pending repairs

What is "catskill?"

Delaware & Ulster Rail Ride rosters an ex-D&H RS-36 and two stored end-cab switchers at Arkville.

Catskill Mountain Railroad has no Alco's.

Empire State Railway Museum in Phonecia has an Alco steam locomotive, but I know that's not what you meant.

Batten Kill Railroad rosters two RS-3's.

Catskill mountain has at least 1 operating RS-3, ex green mt; was operable last I heard, and 1 or 2 more with cracked blocks..dang water!!

Somebody correct us .... :P

Upper Hudson River rr alcos in serious need of work; the 5019 (rs-36) needs a new left side radiator, and I'm told the #5 has a bad valve or blown head gasket. far as I know they don't have anything that runs right now....those old girls need some TLC.... :(

work safe

What alcos are in Owego?

  by scottychaos

'doh!
thanks Otto and Derail..I have my Catskill area railroads mixed up..
I was combining Catskill RR and Delaware & Ulster RR..
I will update my list with corrections..
I have been thinking about building a detailed "entire NY state" Alco roster..this thread will be a good opportunity to do that!
I will put a simple webage together and post it in a few days..

Last I knew there was still at least one black MLW RS18 in Owego..
dont think it runs.
either Owego & Hartford or Tioga Scenic.

You are absolutely correct- Catskill Mountain RR has an ex-GMRC RS-1 stored in operable condition in Kingtson, NY- insular from their operation at Mount Pleasant. They also have another RS whcih I believe is awaiting installation of a new block.

Well, I can think of a couple to add to your list from the WNY area....

Falls Road:
RS-11 #1802 & #1804 - Both Active (I think)

Depew, Lancaster & Western:
RS-11 #1800 Active
RS-11 #3603 NonActive (Parts Unit)

You've left out the RS-3 at one of the cement plants (St. Lawrence?)between MP 102 & 106 on the CSX River (NJ) Sub and the Alco S-4 and S-7 the Cooperstown & Charlotte Valley RR operates.

2 X-Albany Port Alcos in Albany
1 NYC RS-3 owned by M&H Chapter NRHS
2 Alco electrics also owned by the M&H
1 RS-3 shell owned by M&H
1 S-1 X-LIRR 417-stored in Colonie
1 FA2 at Colonie owned by the WM Ry Hist Society
2 FA's owned by NY&LE
2-3 Alco switchers at NYLE

1 S-2 at the former Niagara Mohawk Plant in Tonawanda, NY
1 RS-3 in Catskill NY owned Rich Wiley

Tioga Scenic has a SW600. Owego and Harford has 1 RS18. I also have a picture somewhere of a CP RS18 stored in Owego. Im not sure if it's there anymore. i might check it out during the 4 day weekend.

There is supposed to be an Alco switcher at the new feed mill at Caledonia. I've never seen it in person, so I can't say for certain.

Also, there used to be an Alco switcher at a plant (also a feed mill, I think?), about halfway between Rochester and Syracuse adjacent to the former NYC mainline. Don't remember the name of the town, or the company, but I did see this one, maybe 10 years ago.

There was a herd of former South Buffalo engines, on or near the Buffalo Southern RR until recently. Some, or all of these were supposed to have been scrapped recently. Don't have up-to-date details on these.
