They are allowed to operate with SL IV traps up if there are not enough crew members, they all can still move with the traps up and drop them as the train leaves, they don't have to be dropped and closed before the train leaves, on the SLVs if it is 4 cars and only the conductor they have to walk the train opening and closing traps, it takes time, sure they can leave it up, but don't come crying when you fall in the open hole as the train hits a rough bit of track, what happens when you hit a high level and two traps are set for low level? Or hit a low level and none of the doors are set for it.

Sure your entitled to your opinion, and what you have observed is clearly different to what I have observed, there will never be a solution although these conversation are quite amusing, so please don't think I here just to buck everything you say, I just see it differently

Traps up, no one at the car end is very common on most trains i ride.
