Re: Edgewater Cemetary Tunnels

This was very early - maybe 1989-1991. I remember Walter Rich mentioning it once at a Delaware Otsego annual meeting and saying that the only thing holding it up was price, plus issues with the easements running through the tunnel. There is a Hess gas line that uses the tunnel, still does today.

All the crappy Weird NJ stories about this tunnel are false. You could skip "about this tunnel" and been accurate. The Edgewater Tunnel was once the original planned light rail route instead of the West Shore Tunnel. Think of all the new development it could have served. It was supposed t...

Who owns those Comets?
The Erie Lackawanna Dining Car Preservation Society. They have been renumbered back to their EL numbers: 1700, 1705 and 1802. They already carry the new numbers. Next year we hope to put back the original windowband with EL and faux NJDOT logos.

Well at least 3 Comet Is carried several hundred passengers including Santa Claus and Mrs. Clause on the EL this weekend. First at the Delaware Water Gap (first ticket sold there in 53 years!), then Cresco and finally Tobyhanna. http://njmidland.railfan.net/aa.jpg http://njmidland.railfan.net/bb.jpg...

You can ride them for $13: http://www.eldcps.org/store/2011Santa...

Don't count on it. Expect the usually chain crap that you see elsewhere on the system. Probably a Sabarros, Subway, and a Dunkin Donuts. I have been told that one possible "fast" food chain coming to the terminal is Shake Shack. If true then I don't have to go over to Madison Park anymore.

I would have to really dig through my files to figure out all of the dates, but I agree the sale of the missing link to Sussex County and then them to DO/NYS&W happened after the original Warwick - Franklin deal, but I am pretty sure that even before the 1982 deal that Conrail had ceased running...

I was in Hoboken Terminal today. This is the first time I have seen the new entrance to the ferry concourse at the back of the waiting room. From what I could see it looked like they were doing final cleanup of the walkways and handrails around the slips. The new monitor for ferries in the waiting r...

Trainlawyer: While the zinc mine was not abandoned when Conrail abandoned the L&HR south of the Penn Virginia quarry in Sparta, to my knowledge there was never a rail move to the mine in Ogdensburg again. That mine was the only reason that Conrail kept the line going. Zinc prices dropped and the...

The passenger service was always minor. They had 2 through Jersey City - Wilkes Barre trains but they were strictly utilitarian. The NYS&W didn't care if they made money - only that they didn't lose money, hence they were quickly gone. The NYS&W was all about the coal business and it was ver...

I never got the theory that NYS&W really liked using the Wilkes Barre and Eastern, but that's why besides Stroudsburg & Kingston, nothing was really that impressive. If you can find Volume 1, number 1 and 2 of the NJ Midland RHS' Midlander publication the article by Jim Guthrie on the WB&am...

The NYS&W still owned the Susquehanna Connecting RR and some disconnected branches in the Lackawanna Valley and Wyoming Valley. The NYS&W did get trackage rights to reach the area over the NYO&W but never used them. Instead these lines were operated by the Erie then EL and then Conrail. ...
