Does anyone know the car capacity of the Massena, NY yard....as built, and /or, as of now?
Also, at the Massena yard, what is the signal one sees next to the South Main Street crossing - on the "station side"?
I've never seen it display anything but "red". Thanks in advance.

Leo, Good question on the runaround. Certainly no more "flying switches" in this day and age! Even if they were simply picking up cars (no deliveries) they would still have to get them onto the other end of the locomotive. After the derailment a few years back between Park Street and Buck ...

Leo,

Ref. the local to Canton......do they still operate with a loco on each end? No run-around
track anymore in Canton, or, do they go to Dekalb to run-around?

Glad to hear about increased business for the NY&O. There is certainly potential
for that line, and, the area in general. I wonder if this will mean an increase in
employment on the line?

Yep, modern economic practices (railroading and non-railroading). It is amazing how certain operating practices
worked for decades, then all of a sudden, they no longer work. Guess it all amounts to when a "new team" takes the
controls and brings in their ideas!

Yep, and remember the days when running trains that size (locals) didn't make money or sense!

Yes, I too was disappointed. For a milestone like that I thought we were going to see something special. In my opinion, the magazine in general has gone downhill over the past few years. Their sister publication, Trains, is the same way. David P. Morgan would be turning over in his grave if he saw t...

Leo, The old Dekalb station was moved down CR17 toward Old Dekalb. It is located a few miles down from the hamlet of Dekalb, on the righthand side. Not sure if it is used for anything or not. I was in the station a few times in it's later years. At that time, it was being used to store small amounts...

knucklehead.......I agree. There could be business up here, but, CSX sure does not want it. A shortline or regional
would certainly have a better attitude toward local business.

ccluster......I'm with you! The Dewitt to Montreal line could - in my opinion - be so much better off with a regional / shortline type owner than what we have witnessed in the past 10 or so years. Conrail wanted to sell it, now, I hope CSX (or CP) will sell it off. Anything would be better than what...

Boy, if that doesn't smack of "Monday Morning Meeting"! One office not knowing what the next office is doing / planning. Have seen this too many times in the outfit (public sector) that I retired from. Should be interesting to see what happens up here, especially with the originating termi...

It would have been my guess (and guess only), that they could have cut the train - even if they had to back it some - at a point south of the Buck Street crossing (near the old Kraft plant). All crossings then would have been clear, and, there is no more public crossings south of the village till th...

Yes, I saw one almost like that a number of years ago in Canton, in the dead of winter...very cold. Seven crossings in the Village of Canton (the line cuts through the entire village...all curves, too). A northbound with 4 units (all old U-boats) and 119 cars, loses one unit as it crossed the East M...
