Hello - Commuter service was cut back fom Norristown to Manayunk in August of 1960. It was later expanded to Ivy Ridge in 1979 with a new station and terminus put in place. It was later cut back to Cynwyd in 1986. Hope this helps. John

Thanks for the map . I went by the little stone colonial house with a porch on Ford Road along the ROW. The porch is about the level the tracks would have been. Now I have to investigate if it was a passenger station, because if it were an ordinary house, its front facade/porch would be facing a roa...

Thanks - that's a great description of the route. The place shere I suspect railroad buildings is on Ford Road, as originally mentioned, near Bala Ave., just before the ROW heads into Montgomery Avenue. Also, I found a building at Brookhurst and Schiller Aves., in the Penn Valley/Narberth area which...

There are a few areas in Bala Cynwyd/Narberth where the old Phila. & Columbia travelled between 1832-1850. Are any of the buildings along the very obvious paved-over ROW, that were originally railroad buildings? Has anyone fully investigated? I only ask because there is a small road in Bala Cynw...

Hello, Regarding freight business on the Schuylkill Branch: I recall seeing two freights going through Manayunk: Around 1966 I saw one cross the "S" bridge with several tank cars, gaondolas and several cars with logs (pine?), pulled by 2 F7s. Around 1974, I was waiting for a passenger trai...

RDG old Norristown Branch

From looking at old maps, I found some of the P, G & N station names and locations to be very different from the current and spaced about 3/4 mile apart in places. There was no East Falls, but a Schoolhouse Lane Station where the curent crossing is. Manyunk was located at Green Lane. Near where ...

That sounds right - about 300 yards or so from the underpass to Port Royal Ave. The shelter I saw would have served passengers going to Norristown. At that time, the inbound station was long gone (around 1969). I believe passenger service beyond Manayunk ended around 1960.

Specifically, the PRR station for Shawmont from 1884 was just southeast of where Port Royal Ave. crossed the tracks right by where the current bike trail starts and Nixon Street ends. I remember seeing a little delapadated wooden shelter on the outbound side during the late 60's, when I rode in the ...

My 1968 Penn Central Map shows the terminus being at Schuylkill Haven as does my 1978 Conrail map/book (My Father worked in the Planning Dept. of the Reading, then Conrail). After Hurricane Agnes in 1972, nothing traveled west of Norristown, due to tie/track damage at Port Indian. I remember some tr...

I understand what you mean, but that connection was already there. There was a steep grade from the main line of the Reading near the bottom of Belmont Ave., just west of the Venice Branch by the expressway entrance and it made a sharp turn, crossing over itself (Reading Main Line) and joined with a...

I cannot understand why - if PA pays billions to widen highways, it seems pathetic that service has not been restored from Phila. to Reading, given the amount of car traffic congestion between those points. Could there not be a joint venture between NS and SEPTA, since the Reading was able to run fr...

NJC's "Lily of the Valley" used to run from Newark to Harrisburg via Franklin St. Station in Reading. When did this train cease to operate and why? Did it end before or after Reading's Harrisburg service ended and I'm wondering when Reading's Harrisburg Station closed?
