The Seashore Trolley Museum regrets to announce the passing of Donald G. Curry. Donald was active at the museum until just a couple of weeks ago. He served in many roles over the years from the 1950s on, including a long career as the lead restoration technician. The Town House Shop at Seashore was ...

By the time the phase IV scheme came around the heritage coaches had been replaced by Amfleet II cars to some extent, but they could be found on eastern long-haul trains well into the 1990s. The last stand for the heritage coaches was the Adirondack. Many of the cars were converted into center-door ...

WPTZ, the Plattsburgh NY NBC affiliate, referred to the Adirondack as a "commuter train" on their "return to service" story the other night.

Amtrak operates the food service on the Vermonter.

The NH Liquor Control commission has agreed to allow sales to continue on the Downeaster while this gets sorted out. Gov. Sununu offered to buy the first round on his Instagram (@ChrisSununu).

For both the 400-member NH House and 24-member NH Senate, the pay is $100 per session (two sessions per term) plus mileage, and you do get a free EZPass. Anything involving a contract is also subject to scrutiny by the five-member Executive Council, an institution unique to New Hampshire. Even reque...

Everett Shops had a connecting track, since removed. The Orange and Blue Line trains from Hawker-Siddely were delivered to the T in the late 1970s on their own wheels. A gondola with an adapter coupler was used on each end, and the cars were placed in the train just ahead of the caboose.

The name "Slumbercoach" was actually a Pullman trademark, and Pullman operated all of the Budd-built 24-8s except for New York Central's. (NYC left Pullman in 1958, except for interline services). Pullman also operated a pair of 21 roomette cars (PRR-owned, UP painted) on the MILW-UP "...

At a time when most of the B&M system allowed 263,000 lb. cars, the Hillsboro branch had the same limit. There was a locomotive restriction, with only one class allowed. I think the limit had more to do with bridge restrictions than rail weight. The only locomotives listed with tonnage ratings w...

Soo Line used six axle RSC2s in the Dakotas due to light rail. Milwaukee special-ordered six axle SDL39s from EMD in the late 1960s for light rail in Wisconsin where RSC2s had been the normal power. Soo Line's Wisconsin Central used an RSC3 and a very lightweight SD9 in Wisconsin for the same reason.

SCM stands for Simplified Cam Magnetic. The basic idea is similar to earlier GE MCM (Motorized Cam Magnetic) and "PC" (Pneumatic Cam) controls, with the cam moved by a single motor, instead of paired electric motors or pneumatic cylinders. SCM was also used in Chicago on 2000, 2200 and 240...

The Rutland's Chatham branch was pulled up in 1953/1954. There was a Boston & Albany branch from Pittsfield to North Adams operated for a time by B&M. A stub is in place from North Adams south to Adams.

B&OCT inherited some commuter trains at the time B&O formed it, but most, if not all, were gone by WWI. C&EI, Erie and Monon all used the Chicago & Western Indiana between Dearborn Station and their home rails, so commuter service by those railroads was limited to stops by locals des...

The "no food service" status on NYP-ALB trains is the result of action a number of years ago by Congress, and was not by Amtrak's choice. If I remember correctly the bill prohibited food services on runs of less than 150 miles.

The Ferrisburgh-Vergennes station was the Rutland's station in Vergennes, where it was on the west side of the tracks just south of 22A. It was moved to its present site about ten years ago.

Vergennes-Ferrisburgh has a wheelchair lift in a shed. Lifts can be used for ambulatory passengers as well as wheelchairs.
