Re: Ring of Steel: Fare Gates at BOS, BON, & BBY

I'm still confused by this... are the gates at the entrance doors between the concourse and the tracks, or are they where the Garden alleyway meets the "expanded waiting area"? I can see them at the track doors, cause once you pass through them, you're pretty much committed to getting on y...

If you're looking for info on the history of the StL&C/Lamoille Valley, or the last days of the Lamoille Valley and the lines around Littleton, Whitefield, and out to Berlin/Groveton, Jim Jones has a couple great DVDs. They include anecdotes from former employees, local townspeople, railroad his...

From a financial standpoint, it makes sense to do that. The NH 119 bridge is being replaced (on a new alignment which will cross over the NECR tracks on the VT side) and it wouldn't be too much to accommodate a sidewalk/shoulders, providing it was incorporated into the bridge design). As cool as it ...

I rode the Fort Hill Branch a few weeks ago, starting at the parking lot on NH 119 near the start of the Ashulot Branch, and continued up to the CT River Bridge and back. I had to do it in two sections, however, because of a construction crew working in the middle of the trail, just south of another...

The line from Bellows Falls to Rutland is still running... with the painting of most locomotives to red (and now "Vermont Rail System"), they are trying to make it look like one big system. Essentially it always has been, but with the separate subsidiaries (VTR, GMRC, CLP, NYOG). It appear...

The Vermonter/Valley Flyer have to cross the CSX diamond in Springfield, MA so they have to get the ok from the CSX dispatcher to do that. The rest of the line to the north is CSX (but still under Pan-Am Southern rules in Mass, then NECR in Vermont). The Ethan Allen would have to run on CSX from Alb...

Great to hear! The only issue is how would they run it on CSRR? Could it be "based" in Bartlett and run to Quebec Jct and back? That way, it could be wyed at both ends, wouldn't tie up space in the North Conway yard, and be displayed adjacent to a busy tourist road (Rt 302) when not in ser...

Yesterday (9/2/2022), I finally was able to clinch the Air Line Rail Trail in the state of Connecticut. Yesterday's sections concentrated in the northeast corner of the state, from Pomfret "station" to Putnam and then the Thompson section. The Pomfret-to-Putnam section is the one that was ...

I personally can't see an F40 running on a "run of the mill" tourist railroad in New England. Now on something more substantial (ie-20 or 30+ miles each way), then yes... something with more of a "destination" vs a ride. At the same time, I can't think of a railroad museum in New...

You may be confused by the title of the thread, which I was as well. I don't think we're talking SLE-Hartford Line through service, but rather, SLE thru trains to points on the New Haven Line and Hartford Line thru trains to points on the New Haven Line. Stamford is a big employment draw in the SW C...

Honestly, if a train to the Berkshires is to succeed, then the route it should take is the ex-NH Berkshire line, passing through Mr Norman's Kent. That hits the major tourist draws in the region: Stockbridge, Lenox, Lee, and it gets you to Pittsfield. Of course it would require a large capital inves...

Can a second track be laid but the signal system modified so that only 1 train is in the station at a time? Or can the viaduct itself not support 2 tracks worth of rails and ties, plus one train of passengers?

There hasn't been an operational Track 2 in Hartford for quite some time. The viaduct can no longer support a second track. What I was referring to was utilizing the access from the historic station to Track 2, then gap the fence to provide access to Track 1. This was done maybe 10 years ago when t...

I mean... really, are they trying to kill this service? https://portal.ct.gov/DOT/CTDOT-Press-Releases/2022/Hartford-Line-Service-Changes The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) today announced rail service changes on the Hartford Line (HL) to accommodate two projects that will improve ...

Years ago, during the M&E initiative, there was a plan to extend the Silver Star to Boston, operating over the Inland Route. Regardless, I still don't see why Amtrak thinks the NYP-BOS leg of the NEC doesn't see at least one long distance train extended. Perhaps its because of the limited bridge...
