Re: Long Island Industrial railways?

Both of WM's locations use shuttlewagons. USWX #400 kinda fits the bill too if your definition is loose enough. There were quite a few small, long forgotten (by most people) harborside railways in Queens and Brooklyn that used industrial locomotives, as well as an aggregates place near bay ridge ter...

This is going to be a fun one. If the study comes in costing less than the LIRR option on RBBL, that's going to raise some serious questions on the conclusions. I've heard people say RX would be cheaper because it doesn't involve any tunnels. The people who say this are just looking at fantasy maps ...

This latest article finally sheds a lot of light on the situation: https://www.northjersey.com/story/news/passaic/passaic-city/2020/01/11/passaic-nj-buy-land-near-dundee-island-park/2842594001/ Apparently the rail equipment was also claimed by the IRS and sold to the developer (apparently without hi...

One could definitely say that. Lots of transloading. They did install a new short track for more lumber unloading. 65th street is another spot really buzzing with lumber and construction material unloading. For all the sidings lost around NYC, the ones that remain sometimes seem overflowing with car...

Here's a copy of Rudy's old (2017) roster from further up the thread - he was working with M&E and I believe has since left. I've taken a swing at some updates, from what I saw last year and have read online: C424 #18 - Sold - IL rail museum C424 #19 - Sold - Tri-State HS SW1500 #20 - In service...

Pretty sure I've never seen a photo of LIRR using a gp-38 on a freight, or even a work train. I have a single unscanned photo from my departed uncle, with 2 38's next to the hump at Yard A, and an Mp15ac switching nearby. They were not hitched to any freight cars and I have no idea why they were the...

The 'DM Rail' load sidings at Grand Ave are pretty packed with cars these days. Spotted a half dozen lumber flats in there, along with boxcars extending all the way around the curve (looked like a good 7 or 8 of them), along with a half dozen tanker cars. I'm not sure what's up with the tankers: are...

According to this recent article NY&GL is ok with rail removal but the STB must approve. https://www.rtands.com/railroad-news/railroad-is-in-favor-of-removing-track-in-new-jersey/ It's a forgone conclusion the rails will be removed sooner or later. The only question is the fate of the NY&GL ...

Coal is over. Enjoy these trains while they last. They probably won't exist next year, and certainly won't exist in the next 3-5 years. This decade has decimated coal fired power plants, and frankly I'm surprised this relic still exists. Solar and wind will take over soon enough, and rightfully so. ...

220 is still indeed at a museum in mexico. Check it out on google aerial view: 20.97738, -89.61189 Doesn't look like it has moved in years. Could use a repaint but looks intact. The 213 is stored in south dakota, though it seemed highly unlikely that it'll ever be repaired. When I was out there two ...

It's likely being demolished. Fresh direct moved to the Bronx last year. I suspect this building is going to be replaced with some sort of office building. The deep pocket developers have plans to reshape that whole section of LIC, and maybe deck over the LIRR yard so the property along the creek is...

This is vaporware. If Texas actually wants something like this they should go with something proven and scalable.

Yup, a bunch of these are cars that went to Frontier after sitting for a few years at Arch street. The vast majority of them had parts picked off, though there was one pair that looked to be in pretty decent shape. I forget the numbers offhand.

There are some photos of the tracks here: https://ltvsquad.com/2006/04/04/todd-shipyard-red-hook-brooklyn-nyc/ There was no float bridge that I know of, so I'm assuming the large portal cranes were used to lift materials off ships & barges, onto in-plant rail cars. Revere Sugar, which was right ...

Same for people in Long Island City: why in the world would they go into Manhattan to get to NY Penn to take Amtrak, when LGA is right nearby? Depending on time of day, it's faster to get to Penn from LIC than LGA, even via taxi. I did this just last night. Besides, as ugly as Penn is, LGA is far, ...
