Re: C1 and C3 Bilevels

I recall riding the C3s for the first time in 2002. Man, the A/C was insane! I seem to recall hearing it was because the temp sensors were near the doors, and when open, the entering heat threw them off. Not sure if that's why, but you could hang meat in there at the time. Nice cars - I always found...

I imagine building the western portion of the "box tunnel" (between 11/12 Aves) will require the tearing up of a number of the southern WSY tracks? Be fairly disruptive (like the eastern portion was).

Re: Amtrak Branding NEC: Acela, Metroliner, Regional

When Acela launched, it was launched with 3 intended names: Acela Express (the new, high speed transits) Acela Regional (everything NE regional today) and Acela Commuter (the old Clocker). They even redid the Amfleet paint schemes to match the Acela schemes. The whole thing was dropped because it wa...

Acela has been very successful for Amtrak. It separated the high-speed service from "Amtrak" - a distinct service worth the premium price. Amtrak encompasses the entire national system - but Acela is premium NE corridor. While I loved Metroliner, too, it was an old name and Amtrak needed a...

The PSCC is jointly operated by Amtrak and the LIRR. They alternate days of operation (not sure of actual schedule). I don't know specific territory but it def. covers from Harold through Penn - not sure if/how far into NJ it covers.

Re: Elmont/Belmont Race Track Station

So, wouldn't the current Belmont Racetrack Station be unnecessary? I mean, it is closer to the actual track and could be used only on race days - but this new station's purpose seems to be solely in the fact that it's on the main line, not requiring trains to dead-end at the current racetrack station.

"Penn South" is essentially part of the larger Gateway program. It's a plan to add 7 tracks south of the current "track 1," at approximately the same level. Basically making Penn Station a 28 track station. It does not include any lower level tracks. It's goal is to increase trac...

I don't think they are really shortcomings. According to track maps I've seen, the new tunnels will allow access to all tracks currently used by NJT and Amtrak. And while the new Penn South tracks are stubs, it's fine because NJT can lay up trains there during the day if not needed. Combined with th...

Re: New Penn Station Entrance and Expansion of LIRR Concourse

It's primarily an Amtrak facility. LIRR will be represented too, though, as all their tracks can be accessed from the West End Concourse, and many from Farley. NJT is not an intended occupant, though like the WEC, I imagine they'll be some departure boards for them there. But it's primarily a gatewa...

I think it was just an aesthetic design decision, as the cars would never be rolled that far back to 'hug' the rounded concrete. It appears to be a more elegant way to have the platform straddle the bumper end of the track. Most of the tracks on both levels have them, but there are some squared-off ...

As stated, with so many Arrow IIIs, NJT could rebuild a few sets for the Dinky. It's a slow moving line and the Arrows serve it fine. MLVs make no sense of the Dinky - people climbing stairs for a short ride. The Arrows are far more efficient. It's like the Times Square shuttle essentially.

There's no doubt something drastic will need to be done to rehabilitate the old tunnels, well before the new ones (if ever) are built. Since a full shutdown of the old can't happen now while there's only two, they may need to do a "Canarsie tube" like version of a repair to keep the tunnel...

I found some images in an old Engineering News article I had on the building of GCT (from the time period when it was under construction). The first image shows how Track 100 (of which we've been discussing) was a tail track, which looks like it was there to allow trains to use that large supplies/s...
