But the Portal Bridge North (replacement for current bridge) received an elevated rating making it eligible. And Lord knows we need that replaced asap.

Finishing the PATH tunnel from 9th Street to Astor Place would solve the East Side access problems for NJ commuters for a lot cheaper and a lot less disruption (and would take strain off Penn/North River Tunnels). But since its going to take the PA 10 years to get the PATH 2 miles to Newark Airport...

Oh agreed. ARC was a bad idea all around. And yes, NJT can use these and if Amtrak goes with some sort of push-pull for Empire Service trains, that frees up tracks 5-6 quite a bit. Just saying that run-through would give even more flexibility. But anything that adds more capacity to NYP is probably...
I'm pretty sure any tunnel connection to MNRR is almost impossible for either utility or engineering reasons. Thus, my foam about an elevated link LOL. The ARC Summary Report suggested it was physically feasible, but that it would require disrupting and moving around a track of the Lexington Av sub...
Posted in several other threads, including in NJT and LIRR, courtesy Jaap: What's not shown in the governor's crude slide is that in actuality the plan to add tracks had them running east under 7 Ave to the next block - to fit 12 car trains on those stub tracks. So, that property will need to be af...
Surprised nobody has posted this yet. Big announcement out of Albany... of course, no funding details yet. Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced on Monday a plan that will bring eight new tracks to New York Penn Station -- increasing capacity by 40 percent. The governor unveiled the proposal for creating the...
This is essentially the Penn Station South proposal which was originally part of the Gateway program. I feel this is a great improvement for Penn Station and passenger rail in general. It gives more room for NJT and southbound/westbound Amtrak trains. :-D It is Penn South - interesting that now it'...
Clearances are indeed tight. In the years prior to the M-1's only MP-54s could go to Brooklyn. This gave the oldest cars to branches that traveled mostly to Brooklyn, like Far Rockaway. When it became apparent that the M-1s would be the only cars available, several of the structural walls in BROOK ...
Merry Christmas! This promo vid for a potential HO scale Rohr Turbo model includes both some historical footage and some unique recent footage of the stored RTL-III trains. Maybe I have been out of the HO hobby too long, but what about Rapido products command such high prices over Bachmann? Apples ...
Apparently, the MTA is about to embark on a decades-long project to rehabilitate the train shed north of GCT, which has been rotting away due to water/salt corrosion over a century:

It seems like demolishing/removing Jersey Avenue and creating a larger, more streamlined station here would make sense. Seeing how close these two stations would be. I think this was initially in the plans, esp. with the reverse capability that would not interfere with NEC line operations.
Amtrak will keep their current space (probably closing it for renovations) in addition to the new shared Amtrak/LIRR space. I haven't heard anything about what will happen to Amtrak's existing space - was this reported anywhere? Amtrak will be moving passenger operations to the new Farley building,...
New York City Subway Cars by James Clifford Greller is a fantastic resource book with photos from the beginning through around 1995 (I believe the R110A and Bs are the final cars featured in it). But it shows various paint schemes and great photos of trains in action, including during the graffiti ...
You're right - just saw construction photo. It's a trucking parking lot it will need to traverse.
Though the new Hudson Yards development will sit on top of it.
