I did some additional research and found out that the Type 9 will feature CAF IGBT propulsion. This will be the third project to use CAF propulsion in the United States, after Cincinnati and Kansas City. Previously, CAF outsourced their propulsion to Alstom, Bombardier, Siemens, Mitsubishi, or other...
The press release was updated to say that Metro will belly the cars, same as what's already done with the 1k.
The train sounds great actually. I've seen some comments on other sites wondering why the MITRAC propulsion may sound the way it does now compared to previous versions. Here's 3 reasons I can think of: 1) SiC-type inverters are now becoming common. These are more compact compared to the standard IGB...
The first set of new railcars from Hitachi were unveiled on 10/24/16.

It sounds nearly identical to the outgoing Rohr cars in Washington, DC. Nice job on the train by Bombardier. It looks sharp.
This is a first for Talgo in the United States. As seen in Railway Gazette, up to 74 Breda railcars will be rebuilt and outfitted with updated technology. Link: http://www.railwaygazette.com/news/news/n-america/single-view/view/talgo-to-refurbish-la-metro-rolling-stock.html" onclick="windo...
I'm guessing that the 8k would have very minor modifications if anything. Maybe changing the headlights to LED technology, and having updated software as the modifications. The only other thing I'm guessing is that since PMSM propulsion systems are becoming more common, they could be a possible opti...
"Chris Brown" I don't think the extra weight will be a huge issue for track wear. I think a 8 car 7K train is still lighter than a 10 car NYC train which would be the same length. The 7K are not dramatically heavier than the rest of the fleet. Just under half of the weight the cars is in ...
All of the 2000/3000 cars were completely rebuilt by 2006 IIRC. I doubt that any 4000 series cars will be saved for preservation though. Unlike the 1000 series, the 4000 series were simply a fleet of cars that were used for expansion and don't really have historical significance to the system IMO. T...
Unfortunately this 7000 series car got tagged. This picture was found on the Unsuck DC Metro Facebook page and via @MetroReasons. https://www.facebook.com/unsuckdcmetro/photos/a.378651578193.160893.183023423193/10154131566843194/?type=3&theater" onclick="window.open(this.href);return f...
I wonder if in an emergency they could turn into a video screen and display an actual person conveying a message? I would imagine that the audio would be horrible were they to attempt something like that. The Silver Line stations all have the "older" style of PIDS (some of which are frequ...
I'm not sure when that started. But I do know that the existing vendor for the current PIDS system (Inova Solutions) ended up exiting the transportation industry not long after they installed the current PIDS system. Now they focus specifically on their call center solutions.
I found this on YouTube this afternoon with car 7031: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pP_TNWFHUm8" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; It looks like the LED signage was modified slightly as of late. Apparently on the Red Line, they've been changed in this video to state "Des...
If I remember correctly, Bombardier's previous proposal for the 7000 series bid WAS compatible with the 5000 series, contrary to what the Tribune article seems to state. The CTA first asked for proposals for the rail cars in February 2013, but the next year rejected the initial bids as incompatible...
