Re: Retiring BART's Old Railcars

Very likely it was a new Miami Metrorail car . They're being built in Missouri. The Miami Metrorail cars are not being built in Missouri. They're being built at the new Hitachi Rail plant in Medley, FL that opened in 2016. Source: http://www.hitachi.us/press/03162016-rail" onclick="window...

PATH announcements

So I finally had a chance to make it down to NYC earlier this month and had a question about the announcements on PATH. Does anyone know if the automated announcements are done by text to speech software or if they're done by an actual person that pre-recorded them like the NYC Subway did? I was alw...

Having seen some of the participation mentioned by vendors for the 8000 series bid, I highly doubt Stadler is bidding. Out of the companies that had the highest presence, it was Hyundai Rotem, CRRC and Alstom. But you never know as I don't think anyone expected Stadler to get the contract in Atlanta...

The other thing to remember is the Kawasaki plant is going to be at or near capacity with the NYCT R211 contracts over the next 5-10 years, so it may be an additional reason they may not have bid on the project. CRRC wants to get WMATA any way possible so that's no surprise. Also, CRRC has and does ...

NYCT has suspended R179 deliveries until further notice, citing problems with the door systems and HVAC software. Link: https://www.thestar.com/business/economy/2019/01/25/new-york-city-transit-chief-slams-bombardier-halts-deliveries-over-train-issues.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);...

So now that there was a YouTube video posted of the R211 body shells taken in Japan (which seems to have been taken down), I have to say that I'm liking the updated cab ends. That being said, I'm wondering if Kawasaki decides to make the move to possibly using PMSM propulsion on the new fleet and/or...

Vapor door controls in many cases have that noise that are heard on the M-7/M-7A cars. Even the PA-5 cars from PATH and the Alstom R160A cars have that noise but just not as loud. It could depend on the model of the door motors/electronics/components being used because the Vapor controls on the Bomb...

What sort of problems is Bombardier having building the R-179's and why? Haven't they been a relatively good builder in past years? Toronto IIRC had an awful time with their LRT acquisition, and fired BBD. Toronto didn't fire Bombardier as the streetcar contract is still ongoing. That was because M...

The usual incompetence from WMATA workers. Of course the union makes it so you can't fire these losers so expect this kind of thing to continue. Very true. Same thing happened in the Woodley Park accident where WMATA fired the train operator but the union forced WMATA to rehire the train operator. ...

Did anyone figure out the make and model of the propulsion engine? Sounds very similar to the WMATA 1000 trains. It's a Bombardier MITRAC system as the Bombardier site has confirmed this in the past. BART likely has a variant of the MITRAC DR1200 series motor combined with a variant of the MITRAC T...

It appears that Kawasaki is getting the R211 order. From the article, the carshells will be built in Lincoln, Nebraska and then have assembly and testing work done in Yonkers. Link: https://asia.nikkei.com/Business/Companies/Kawasaki-Heavy-poised-to-win-massive-order-for-NYC-subway-cars?page=1"...

Very strange, because in early August, WMATA loved how the cars are coming along. In that article, they're projecting to possibly finish the project a year ahead of schedule. Also, the cars are meeting and exceeding their MDBD requirements. https://wamu.org/story/17/08/01/7000-series-cars-coming-ahe...

Turns out besides the train hitting debris in the track, a video on YouTube also mentioned that there were door problems later in the day and an interior was vandalized. I saw the vandalism picture on Facebook where someone marked up a seat with gang symbols.

1 of the BIE's was due to hitting track debris, where it went back into service soon after. Not sure what the second one was.
