Dpends on what you're interested in. The commuter rail system (in SEPTA-ese the RRD, for Regional Rail Division) serves a number of areas inside the city plus a lot of suburban territory. The R1 runs from the airport to Center City (3 main stations). From there you can transfer to the other R-number...

Incidentally, there are all kinds of tunnels and open areas underneath 30th Street station called "the catacombs." According to a friend of mine, you can actually walk from there across the Schuylkill River inside of (under the roadway) one of the bridges, I forget which one. It also lead...

Remember, there WAS a tourist trolley line on Delaware Ave. many years ago, operated (I think) by the Buckingham Valley Trolley Association. They had several regauged cars but political and economic conflicts forced them out of service. One cool thing I remember was that a commercial was filmed usin...

But think of the fun you could have:

Next stop, Morton Salt!

Anyone for Haver Ford-Lincoln-Mercury?

Two tickets to the Yardley Cologne station, please...

Just take the Frankford A-O-El

Yup, that's pretty close to the actual sound, at least based on some coaching I received from a former co-worker who grew up in Wales. The "ll" is apparently something like a "th" but with an aspirated "h" overtone; hence the almost-K sound you noted. But I was trying t...

Try your Welsh pronunciation on Llanerch and Uwchlan. Roughly, LAN-erk and somewhere between OOKlan and UCKlan (I think)

Still a whole lot easier than the famous station sign on the other side of the pond:

Re: New BSS , Subway Surface Cars ?

Philly has always had a propensity for operating electric equipment far past the time when it is attractive to riders--- mostly because the equipment, especially that built by Brill, was so durable. How true. That attitude unfortunately was in a good part responsible for the mid-1980s debacles ... ...

The CTA's were essentially a purchase of both opportunity and desperation. So many Bullets and Strafford cars had failed that the line was shut down for a while. Without new rolling stock it might have been closed permanently or converted to a paved busway like the Ardmore line (gackkk!). The CTA's ...

But I doubt any modern vehicles, even the K-cars, are built as solidly as Brill products were. They were the epitome of the term "built to last".

You're willing to pay another 1/2% for more of the same? Pffeh! Remember, I said "... if I felt the money would do some good, but it doesn't work that way ... they have to be accountable to someone", which they ain't. Man, I'd love it if the company I work for could set its own standards ...

As for paddles, they should have been special insulating devices for isolating the car from the line voltage. I do remember more than one operator telling a naive passenger that the paddles were there in case a rider became unruly ... :-D Anyway, I sure wouldn't have wanted to find out the hard way...

New Year's Quiz:

How many people remember the compartments marked "Paddles" and "Flags" on the P&W Bullets and Strafford cars?

And how many people know what their purpose was?

What I have a problem with is these semi-governmental bureaucracies that operate without a real care for expenses, knowing that politicans will rob Peter to pay Paul and bail them out. Where's the accountability in Septa? For any of their actions, decisions and choices? It's a total political racke...

But you can at least buy a single ticket that's good for a trip from a station on one side of the system through CC to a station on the other side. It's a bit more than the cost of a one-way to CC but a lot less than buying two one-ways. You just have to remember to hang onto the ticket if you have ...
