Re: Trains on CSX St. Lawrence Sub (CR's Montreal Secondary)

WIth traffic levels falling by a third, CN may be looking for reasons to renegotiate or back out of a binding purchase agreement. STB apparently offers that reason by asking CSX to agree to a term CSX doesn't want. Even though it is difficult to see how the term presents a real threat to CSX's inter...

The main item I am aware of is an accelerated catch-up on PTC implementation and training. I don't know of any construction projects being accelerated. If anything NJ's clampdown on activity was so severe that construction might have been delayed.

There was at least one run to the quarry with 5 cars last year. When construction season begins, hopefully they will start to use the line. Somerville Lumber is out of business so the quarry is the only potential customer, unless a shipper moves into the old Somerville Lumber facility.

Thanks QB 52.32, I hope your forecast is correct. I drive I-80 through Pennsylvania pretty often, and see truckloads of steel coils, cement, hazardous chemicals, lumber/forestry products traveling long haul. Those loads are natural high-density traffic that should move mostly by rail, yet it seems t...

Yes the organizational behavioral problems predate PSR, and PSR is the breaking-the-gordian-knot solution to those problems. Nonetheless, I submit that a well-run Class I should market just as well as a short line, but that's just not the case. Carload traffic is down about 8% in the last year while...

Yes, CSX is doing well, and their demonstrating strong investment returns is a favorable signal for the entire railroad industry. I would be pleased to see more NS lines sold to short line operators. Thinking about the Buffalo & Pittsburgh line, once a CSX subsidiary in steep decline and one of ...

You may see a slowdown in railcar numbers this week after the big derailment in Bound Brook yesterday morning

I am just guessing that they are going to/from the Kinkisharyo railcar facility in Piscataway to be refurbished.

I believe interchange would have been by rail barge, which would have ended completely by some time in the 90s at the latest.

to answer my own question...there were 2 reefers spotted there this morning, so yes they are getting service.

there was also a centerbeam car in the lumber place in the Bronx.

that's my yearly trip on the Harlem line.

does the potato place in Mount Vernon still get service? you'd think this is their high season but I just passed it and didn't see any freight cars there

All types of criticisms have been leveled against PSR but the higher current profits have proven that railroads are worthy of investors' capital. I am pleased to see more reliable operations at CSX and hope they do expand their service offerings to more customers. The transition was probably unneces...

Isn't PSR just implementing operations management batch-processing techniques long ago developed in other manufacturing processes? Is PSR revolutionary, or is it an indictment of sloppy prior management practices? My concern isn't with PSR...it's the higher rail tariffs applied alongside it potentia...

QB 52.32: It sounds like you have insight into the implementation of CSX pricing policies and I wish you success. I just wonder about the cost/benefit analysis for shippers and wonder whether CSX and other railroads try to capture too much of the short term benefit from shipping by rail, making long...

thanks for posting the updates! Is the ironbound line out of use past the plastics plant? I see the new fresh foods place retained the rail siding but it may be out of use. Also does Benjamin Moore paints use rail?
