Re: Housatonic Railroad Thread (Maybrook, Berkshire, Pittsfield)

Interesting feature piece in Railfan & Railroad on the Housatonic. Such a rosy picture, which may be true, but feels a bit puffy. I wonder how the folks feel at the Berkshire Scenic, given their struggles to deal with the Housatonic management.

I thought it might be fun to post this in this forum. I took this in 1969 after a blizzard in that year. This scene is in Peabody, behind my house on Lynnfield street, south Peabody. To give the viewer some perspective...I am looking west, toward Corwin Street, which is ahead near the smokestacks. T...

Bartlett, 1977, looking west. I scanned this in from a slide. Standing at the freight shed looking west. You can see the west leg of the wye ahead on the left. Route 302 in the distance, and the outline of the roundhouse is just visible in the area of the birches. I wonder what happened to the coach...

Hey Jonathan, great clips! I will keep an eye on your page!

As an aside, I will bet that it was the same crew on the train that you caught...there is a bag hanging from the window on each photo...looks like they are keeping their lunch cool :)

I got lucky and caught the local headed to Portsmouth yesterday. A pretty good string of cars, with one lumber, one box car, and about 8 propane. The old Stratham station looks pretty good with colors that are close to the old B&M style!

I finally got a chance to ride the extended trip to Brunswick yesterday. Took the 681 from Haverhill North to Brunswick, and the 686 South from Brunswick back to Haverhill. Overall, great trip, and a special thanks to 2 great crews on both trips. Great customer service, and they were helpful to all....

I recall this issue coming up a couple years ago too. My hunch then and likely still a good guess, is that the brush cutting allows access to the overhead power lines in that area you mentioned. I wish it were more than that, like related to service on the line, but unlikely. At the Summit Street cr...

Thanks for pointing that out... It does not have an exact start date, but it does say that service as the Flying Yankee ended in "early 1941." It then states that "During most of WW II B&M 6000 served as the Mountaineer...a late 1944 re reassignment...as the Cheshire." So not...

From the same book...

"arrival" February 9, 1935
"Beginning on April 4, 1935, The Flying Yankee started a grueling Portland-Boston; Boston-Bangor-Boston, and Boston-Portland schedule of 733 miles per day."

"How many years did it run as the "Mountaineer"?" I am looking at Carl Byron's book, "Boston and Maine Trackside" (Morning Sun Books, 1999, page 98) He notes: That the Flying Yankee served as the "Mountaineer" until 1944. "A late 1944 reassignment placed ...

small world...I took a look at the link and the diner in the photo. It notes that it was on Foster Street in Peabody, MA . If it is the one that I remember, it was called the Red Rambler diner and was quite busy during the 1960s at the height of the leather industry at that time. It was surrounded b...
