Re: Greatest Rail Opportunity in 50 Years

There was an article on 10/15/2021 Fridays Wall Street Journal. It particularly focused on CSX and UP with the current shipping woes. A few things were cited such as lack of conductors and have to reopen rail yards. Jim Foote from was CSX was quoted in there who I believe is originally from Canadian...

Am I wrong to see PTC as a positive thing to maintain safest top speeds while avoiding going too fast for conditions? Yes, but that is why they pay a competitive wage to the two busiest commuter railroads in the United States. You're required to know multiple manuals, the speeds, and outside surrou...

The delays caused by PTC on Metro North are probably incalculable at this point. Not sure how it is on the other side of the Long Island Sound...

It looks like the signals are similar to the NYCTA or Metro North in Grand Central. Three signal bulbs maybe red, yellow, and green for the different aspects. I can't see the ride being quick once you hit Roosevelt Island probably a slow crawl through the curves and then down into Grand Central. Esp...

I would think the SW1001s would still be allowed in the Grand Central Tunnels on an emergency basis in case if an electric set broke down or crashed, or if maintenance work was needed on the branch. This relatively rare operation would essentially be the same as the SW1001s on the Atlantic Branch, ...

I think LIRR took it back for the Mainline Third Track project. It was mentioned that NYA got it for agreeing to not use the Garden Mitchell Secondary maybe around 2001. Azzil Granite has since folded and no longer takes cars in the West John Street Hicksville Yard.

Naming bridges by number is a recent thing, in the past they were either called by the approx. milepost location (103 bridge Hall, etc) or if they were close to a prominent landmark like a street (Met at Jay for Metropolitan Ave) or something nearby, like the Meathouse at Hall. If it was the start ...

When CP Rail started coming down to Fresh Pond, Queens in 1999 their locomotives still had torpedos on them. To be fair, they were used more for pranks than anything else

They probably had a more important application before the use of radios etc!

On a more serious note is it still a possible plan to piggyback off the Amtrak order for new locomotives for both LIRR and Metro North?

A contractor from Bombardier was out on Metro North property to size up the new craze, battery charged MU's for both the Danbury and Waterbury lines.

Anyone with other insights?
Could be me, but would somebody be wearing a vest like that in 1973? Is that possibly a later photo near PD tower?

Should be today's Old Medford Ave with the bridge replaced not too far back last 20 years or so? Rt 112 turns into Medford Ave more south past Woodside Ave. North Ocean would be the next overhead bridge west on the Medford/Holtsville border. I would have to look up what was considered Tunnel Rd back...

A lot of moving parts with this and something to keep on eye on. To show people newer to the railroad how much things have changed: Around 2000 the Kawasaki C3's(diesel coaches) needed to be retrofitted. The work was going to be performed by non-union personnel. The LIRR unions wouldn't entertain th...

Not so with the Engineers' union, which permits non-members to operate trains on the LI's tracks. Also all NYA employees are full paying members of LIRR's BLE (269) and have been since the beginning. First they were members of UTU local 385 croton-on-Hudson(Conrail). Both transportation and engine ...

There is now talks of a third party entity handling East Side Access. I'm not sure if that pertains to train service, but people with monthlies looking for that one seat ride into Manhattan surely aren't going to be happy if they have to transfer!
