Metrolink San Bernardino Line Improvements

by D.S. Lewith ¦  Sat May 02, 2020 3:35 am ¦  Forum: California Commuter, Rail Transit, and High Speed Rail (HSR) ¦  Topic: Metrolink San Bernardino Line Improvements ¦  Replies: 14 ¦  Views: 2357

Aside from the Orange County line, the San Bernardino line is the only other line that is most likely to be electrified (and pretty much the first to be electrified if Metrolink ever starts electrifying). In tandem with the Foothill Extension, Metrolink can start electrifying the San Bernardino line...

Re: Bombardier rail division sold to Alstom.

I wonder where the railcars are going to be produced now. Romania? Slovakia? Because Western Europeans have been complaining about Alstom closing the factories in their countries, and now they're going to be closed in Canada as well... I expect Alstom to retain factories in countries where they do ...

You're right, the Rotem plant was separate from the IKEA store. But anyways, the former Rotem factory was purchased.

Why wait? They could go after the Rochelle facility that Nippon-Sharyo has left vacant for a couple years now. It's more modern than Plattsburgh, and available today. You could say the same with Hyundai Rotem's now-closed Philadelphia factory, though it's now an IKEA store. Who knows what could hap...

It's been a while since my last post here, but there's something I want to bring about: Recently, Bombardier is going to sell its rail division to Alstom. This was clearly an opportunity for Alstom to expand to counter CRRC's growing presence around the world and their slow entry into the EU rail ma...

Let me say it here -- we need a diesel/electric dual-mode that's as light as the Sprinters, does 150 MPH on both diesel and electric, and has the range of the existing diesels being used. Only then can we kill engine swaps. Which is why it's gonna be better practical for Amtrak to find an electro-d...

I didn’t know EXO was dumping the 45DP fleet. Are they for sale or storage? I can’t imagine they’re or much use to anybody else. I don’t think they are being officially dumped yet, but Exo is not going to use them under wire any longer. Looks like the ALP-45DP's purpose has been defeated. Better or...

Developing such a train might not be economically viable anyway. What is the market size for such power? 10-20 for Amtrak and maybe 7 for SEPTA if they go ahead with the Phoenixville extension. Which is why I don't consider it to be practical (tempting buying just locomotives compared to trainsets ...

In the five year Amtrak equipment plan from 2019 to 2024, it says that there is a proposal to order hybrid diesel/catenary locomotives which would really cut down on the dwell times with of trains that perform engine changes. It's too long at Washington Union Station, especially when heading south....

I'm sure a company like Hitachi can fix these problems , and offer a suitable product. Wether they would bother for the small American market that has proven difficult is another matter . Hitachi opened up a manufacturing plant in Florida 3 years ago (https://www.reliableplant.com/Read/30437/hitach...

One, Amtrak really needs to be following the philosophy of the low cast airlines and trying to standardize their fleet as much as possible for the maintenance cost savings and flexibility. Adding in a new design for a handful of routes is problematic. Second, you end up lugging around extra weight ...

The electro-diesel or Bi-Mode Class 802 has 3 GU (diesel generator units) per five car set and 5 GU per nine car set. A 5 car set has a GU situated under vehicles 2/3/4 respectively and a 9 car set has a GU situated under vehicles 2/3/5/7/8 respectively. You might find this interesting! According t...

What "works" in the UK never crosses the pond well and becomes a "road failure" in the US. FRA never looks/accepts Network Rail's "Safety case" paperwork. With the exception of the ASEA RC-4,everything else was a failure/crap out It wouldn't hurt for Hitachi to adapt t...

One of the biggest obstacles that affects Amtrak services is having to change engines to venture non-electrified tracks from electrified tracks. This affects the Northeast Regional, Keystone/Pennsylvanian, and the New York services (Empire Service/Maple Leaf, Adirondack, Ethan Allen Express). Sure t...
