Re: CP Rail network.

The Iowa Chicago & Eastern was also a subsidiary of CP, but was merged into the Dakota Minnesota & Eastern a few years ago. Small amounts of equipment from the IMRL RailLink can also be found. IMRL went bankrupt and was bought by the IC&E. Actually, the IC&E was formed from IMRL, an...

My guess is reinforcement support. Perhaps there were signs of the bridge warping from age, and it was cheaper to simply brace the sides together.

Makes sense to me!

Chicagoland Railyards

It doesn't take too long to figure out that, historically, Chicago is filled with parallel railroad routes - particularly on the South Side. For example, New York Central and Pennsylvania were directly side by side from Englewood all the way into Indiana. Nickel Plate Road was also parallel to these...

Eh...didn't do much good.

There's also the Twin Ports Railfan Page, but it raises as many questions as it does answer them.

Untangling The Twin Ports

I recently started a thread about the Duluth South Shore & Atlantic , partly because I've been trying to build a historic railroad map of the Duluth area on Google Maps (because I haven't found any), and partly because it's just really interesting. As major rail hubs go, it's not uncommon to get...

Ha! I was just on a 666 ethanol train a few days ago. They're always easy trains to run!

What particular service in what areas are the SOO SD60s in? Are they used at all on DME ethanol trains? Ha! Nope. Pretty much all road power we get - leasers included - are SD40-2s. But I've heard we may start getting SD60s...eventually. SOOs are everywhere up here in the Twin Cities. Bunch went to...

Where did the Staten Island Railway fit in with the B&O? I've heard there was some historical connection, at least, between the two. I know they went as far west as Cranford where they connected with CNJ. How did they operate? ...there was a bus turntable installed so that the buses could turn a...

Aaaaaaaaahh I see it. At Marengo, the line east is still used by CN, correct? It's still intact all the way through north of Bessemer (a town I know too well). I followed the right-of-way all the way west to Superior. It goes through the little hamlets of Sanborn, Delta, and up to Iron River, and ba...

I'm giving this thread a "bump" because there's good questions here that could use further explanation. It is important to understand that this is a strange area geographically. A good look at the South St. Paul area on Google Maps will help. First off, " South St. Paul " is diff...

The Ayd Mill route is most logical. In fact, I'm almost certain. The Fort Snelling route is incredibly old, and that hill out of the valley must've been incredibly steep! It's no wonder it was abandoned so long ago. It would never be able to take the growing weight of rolling stock and locomotives. ...

I have no idea. But if C&NW shared a depot, I'd guess it shared with the Great Northern. First off, is it really a good idea for each railroad to have its own station in such a small city? There's already three others. Someone must have got wise, and shared with a railroad with a different geog...

One notable exception is what UP wanted most. The Council Bluffs to Chicago line. Why hasn't anyone else acquired this line since? I know the Iowa Interstate Railroad is largely redundant since both UP and BNSF now have good track between Chicago and Omaha, and therefore there isn't much to be gain...

But St. Louis would become a bottleneck in a different way because it would now have an influx of north/south traffic pushing through an east/west gateway. What lines might get upgraded? I think this point sheds light on one of the more underrated losses in our American rail infrastructure. The for...
