Don't forget the freight carriers (CN?) allow only a certain number of frequencies on the Corridor services hence the real need for a dedicated set of tracks for only passenger services. Amtrak owns most of the NEC and therefore can run as many trains as capacity and demand warrant. Yeah dedicated ...

In the winter, its ridership. In the summer, trains like The Canadian are running so full that they're basically at the limits of length. There were 30 car Canadians that went out last summer which is basically the technical limitation of HEP system. When they cut in the Panorama car at Edmonton, th...

Hope they don't get too caught up on that 'electrification-capable' spec. Non-electric locos are dirt cheap, comparatively to replace, than the cost of electrification. And even then, realistically, would electrification ever make sense?

As for the freight issue, I was more replying to the idea that CN, CP, or even some 3rd party, might view the new line as attractive for moving stuff Toronto <-> Montreal and not some local freights. In which case the freight train would need to be fast enough to not get in the way of the passenger...

Does Amtrak have to let any freight carrier in the nation run over the NEC 100 times a day? Freight carriers routinely run over the NEC to serve customers who are only accessible through rails attached to the NEC tracks. Its mostly scheduled in off-hours, but to say that NEC tracks are truly dedica...

Would CN/CP services be barred from VIA's corridor? Wouldn't VIA have to let CN/CP use its facilities to repay use of its network, particularly outside of the corridor? Is there any realistic way that VIA could keep a VIA-owned corridor dedicated to VIA operations? Given that such a corridor might h...

As for the Park cars, VIA did not have to remodel the rear "bullet lounge" I'd definitely have to disagree on this point. The former chairs definitely had accessibility issues, and you couldn't possibly wheel a wheelchair in the area that contained the drink holders/ashtrays attached to t...

I VIA was able to rebuild four Park cars and eight Château sleepers to create Prestige class. VIA had no choice, they needed to meet the accessibility mandate of the courts when it came to their obligations under the human rights code. Anyone with a suitable disability and their attendant is accomm...

VIA might have to start removing some equipment for service this year This is serious, as it indicates that there's equipment for which regulatory compliance is quite questionable. And probably some back-room deals between VIA and Transport Canada/the railways as to whether such equipment is even a...

Whatever the issue was, it seems to have affected more than one train set: VIA has cancelled two successive runs of the westbound Canadian (the one scheduled to leave Edmonton for Vancouver on 28.xii.2017 and the one scheduled to leave Edmonton for Vancouver on 30.xii.2017). The agent I spoke to on...

It's amazing how many people give the "Canadian" a "pass" just because of its equipment and on board service. I have yet to feel like I wanted to bail mid-trip on the Canadian (or any VIA train) like I have on the CZ and Empire Builder (if alternate transportation had been avail...
