Not Skeena related other than it impacts Jasper, but everyone is aware of the new 3/4 trains (Vancouver-Edmonton) starting end of April, right? I only heard about it recently. https://www.viarail.ca/sites/all/files/media/pdfs/schedules/winter2018/40-41_Toronto-Winnipeg-Jasper-Vancouver.pdf" on...

I've often wondered - should it be a a two day daylight train say May through October (expanding the peak season a bit perhaps), but then since daylight is at a premium October through April on this route for the most part, does it make sense to revert to the old overnight schedule? Not sure. But e...

The locos are not MU'ed together. So the unit that is in tow just idles with no electricity applied to the traction motors. Don't know for sure if the "start-stop" logic is employed or not in the winter while its in tow though, or if it is just kept running all the time. Couldn't tell you ...

The Canadian car configurations

I've been wanting to book a trip Vancouver-Toronto on The Canadian, but need a very specific date. I can't book until January. And due to the big 40% off sale, people seem to have booked out the sleeper rooms on a particular departure. Like one day there were plenty of rooms (Cabin for 2, Cabin for ...

VIA doesn't even pay enough to CN to allow CN to make a return on its investment. Basically CN regards VIA as a nuisance and would kick them off their tracks altogether without hesitation if they felt they could tolerate the potential political repercussions. How exactly is VIA supposed to attract p...

Until VIA starts writing huge cheques, they're going to be increasingly marginalized everywhere they operate. Corridor, Western Canada, etc. Railway infrastructure is actually valuable these days, so they can't expect to forever receive low marginal pricing.

If I read the numbers correctly, performance of The Canadian fell drastically in Q2. Blamed on the terrible on-time performance. On that note, and recently confirmed on Facebook, for peak season 2019, The Canadian will be a 2X Toronto-Vancouver service, and 1X weekly Vancouver-Edmonton roundtrip. No...

lol i'm aware it's different. Amtrak even has its track fenced off from everything else. I just see a lot of the VIA rail consists every time I'm in BC. Yes. The cars on the inside have been modernized quite nicely though, especially the "Prestige" ones. The coaches are scheduled to be mo...

What needs to be done on this bridge is replacing all of the chain-link fencing with either mini-link or another more secure fence type to deter trespassers especially now in the wake of this incident... Its basically impossible to secure rail infrastructure in such a way. Kids who are intent on be...

Re: Age Of VIA Trains

Some of the Budd Economy Class cars on the Canadian were acquired from Amtrak in the early 1990s I understand. As old as 1946.

The Seattle-Vancouver equipment is Amtrak's, is it not? Pretty sure VIA has nothing to do with that service.

Don't know about the US, but overnight on the long-distance trains like the Canadian, there's only 3 people who have to be awake. 2 loco engineers, and 1 attendant. They've had 700+ passengers aboard, 32 cars.

Looks pretty hard to conclude that the fault lie with anyone other than the person who didn't use the proper pedestrian facilities then.

So crossing the bridge, on the tracks, was legal and sanctioned by the railway? Or was a separate walk-way, isolated from the tracks, available for the purpose?

Hudson Bay Railway

OK, great press release. While of course the Canadian Government is negotiating hard to be included in NAFTA II, they must start looking for agricultural markets away from the US and Mexico. The established Eastern ports such as Halifax could be overwhelmed, and Churchill could again become viable....

Re: New Schedules for the Canadian are available

I suspect that economy passengers really want a cheaper and more timely train much more than they want a refurbished train. Well they're getting a refurbished train. It was announced, a contract was given to an outfit in La Pocatiere, QC. But will that address any of the underlying issues? Or will ...
