Re: Utica Branch Discussion Thread

I visited the Sherburne station in the late 1970s, a local resident commented that there was a derailment on the main somewhere and long freights were diverted to this line, said one train had UP engines and sparks were shooting from the wheels as the train struggled up the northbound grade. That mu...

The mill specialized in newsprint and directory paper (yellow pages). The internet has had a big impact, newspaper circulation is in rapid decline, and yellow pages are non existent. Only the most efficient mills survive.

Large sections of the East Millinocket mill have been demolished. The mill will never open again.

I suppose we are lucky that such an operation existed for as long as it did. Hopefully they leave the bridge in place and don't remove it. It is not a barrier to navigation.

Re: Baltimore's failure to build a container yard for Panama

One thing that would probably keep CSX from using the Amtrak tunnels is that Amtrak only gives a brief window to freights operating in the Northeast Corridor. CSX wants to develop a double stack lane from New England south to Florida, can't work if you can only run through the tunnels a few hours at...

With coal and oil business down, containerized traffic has growth opportunities. The Howard Street tunnel project is a worthy investment, supports the Port of Baltimore and allows CSX to run double stacks to Philadelphia and points north. The Virginia Avenue project will be completed first in DC. I ...

It would seem the low hanging fruit has been picked. Pan Am seems to think there is growth coming from the Port of St John from container traffic and is rebuilding their connection. Not sure how 10MPH track can compete for that business. Irving will then get CM&Q and Pan Am into position to beat...

I would have to think the town wont raze the shops since they are a source of employment and if they do, the CM&Q can move their operations somewhere else. Rather, I think their taking over the property is an attempt to salvage the jobs that are there and give the location some stability. The sh...

My understanding the the line to Caribou has been embargoed due to poor track conditions, the propane operation is relocating to Easton and will continue to be served by rail. Others certainly will comment more.

This is all good news. The new owners have a vision and a long term commitment. The challenge is to continue to build on profitable traffic, but with a finicky Irving and the expansion of the Port of St John, good fortune will have to shine on the MM&A.

I would not hold my breath about a new tunnel, which would cost billions. Maybe ten to twenty years from now we will see this, but the new Panama canal is open, and a way to move double stacks out of the port is top of mind, both for CSX and the State of MD

Looks like they found a way to enlargen the tunnel, raising it in some places, lowering it in others. Earlier this year, Baltimore appeared to be heading back on track to have double-stacking capability through Baltimore City. In April 2016, CSX and Maryland announced plans to increase the height of...

CSX is raising funds to expand the Howard Street tunnel to accommodate double stacks., about 450 million.

I would anticipate this going through.

According to an article in ATLANTIC NORTHEAST RAILS & PORTS, the CMQ had a loss of $243,000 in the second quarter, loads were 6,688 and revenue 7.7 million, or an average of $1,151 per load. So essentially, the quarter did not create a net profit.
