Shamokin Valley Railroad

Does anyone here know what are the current Shamokin Valley Railroad operations are like? Can any of the North Shore system engines be used as motive power or do they usually assign the same engines for the SVRR? I've heard a while back that they generally only run as far as Shamokin only a few times...

Here's some more information. The L&NE Nazareth Branch opened for service in 1901. It started in Wind Gap using the old "Bender's Link" (the southern and older of the two alignments at the base of the mountain) right of way between Wind Gap and Bushkill Junction. From Bushill Junction ...

The NDC Railroad has been operating since approx. 1986, and as of late, business is really booming for them. They serve a few industries located in the remains of the old Atlas Cement plant, the Northampton Development Center, hence "NDC". They used to have an Alco S6, S6m (Alco engined Ba...

Actually it makes sense about the abandonment. The Sandt's Eddy cement plant was closed, Alpha was serviced by the Erie Lackawanna. Why would the LNE Railway need that trackage, with 2 large trestles (Mud Run & Upper Mud Run or Lower Mud Run, I forget) plus the steep grade leaving the Delaware ...

And remember that pre-Conrail, unit coal movements for Keystone and Atlas ran over several lines just to get these plants. Coal came up the LV's E&N Branch and was then interchanged with the EL B&P Branch at Belfast Junction. The EL then took the coal to Bath Junction where the N&B picke...

I don't see what the N&B served except for the 2 cemement factories (one in Northampton still served by NS and the other in Bath). It appears that all the N&B did was run a few miles from the CNJ connection in Northampton to the LNE in Bath and only had the 2 major online customers. Aside f...

Whoever it was that decided to pull the plug, it was because there was virtually no traffic to handle by 1979. Railroads like the N&B and Ironton that almost solely depended on the cement industry for their revenue started losing money back in the mid 1950's when the ICC gave permission to Matla...

Last week or so, NS ran a 52T solid unit grain destined for ConAgra Martins Creek. They can't take an entire unit train at once though, so the cars are spotted in smaller cuts by evening job H71 (if that's still its symbol).

The N&B was a subsidiary owned by US Steel. I believe the only thing the N&B did was act as an interchanger of cars between the CNJ and LNE. It was a single track that connected the 2 lines. On 4/1/76 with the LNE and CNJ lines now both CR no interchnage was needed so CR instantly abandoned...

Actually 3 lines at Bath, 4 if you include the street railway. The Lehigh & New England, Northampton & Bath, and the Lackawanna all interchanged at Bath Junction. Today Bath Yard is just a field with nothing but weeds and trees nest to the single track NS, but you can see where all the track...

The E&N is one of the many lines I wish was still around. I also learned a lot about it from Mike Bednar's books. Unfortunately I don't have any shots of the line in operation, but I have pics all along it after it was abandoned. I also shot most of the crossings that were still in place a few y...

Actually the last online customer is Strober-Haddonfield in Uhlers. They usually get a 3-4 cars of lumber per week. The line that ended in the field is the old LV E&N Branch which only goes for about 1000 feet or so before stopping behind Equipto in Tatamy...

Does anyone on this forum ever railfan or see the CHR in action? I'd like to know what their Alco looks like.

NS local H66 brings many covered hoppers to the Palmerton Yard. I am trying to get pics of the Chestnut Ridge in action. Looks like they use GP7 #11 most of the time.

The remaining L&NE track including L&NE Railway is operated as the Norfolk Southern Cement Secondary. The line goes 22.6 miles from Bethlehem to Uhlers, Pa. and services remaining cement mills and general industry.
