Re: Remembering Paul Joyce (3rd Rail)

I'm new to the site, but I've been reading a lot of the older posts about traction topics. I've found so much information in Paul's posts, and wish I was around to ask him questions.

Bidding has finished. Now the big questions are who bought it, and what is its future? Hopefully preservation.

Current bidding is at $20,500, which is roughly scrap value (not sure the current prices).

Re: Locomotive Brakes

Locomotive engineers are qualified on their territory, and operate trains on the same section of railroad day after day. They learn where to use braking power, and where to not. Usually, dynamic brakes are used to their maximum effect before using air brakes, because it reduces wheel and brake shoe ...

While I am glad to see this preserved, it means the end is near for B-B Dash 8s. A lot of them have been sold to short lines, (not all of them are ex-LMX units), although the second hand market for GEs is smaller than for EMDs. NS recently donated a Dash 8-32B, and a few other Dash 8-40Bs were recen...

Appears that the unit still has friction bearing trucks, so probably would go by flatcar, assuming the auction site is connected to the national network. If not, the cost of moving something like this usually exceeds the purchase price.

I assume that EMD is still trying to figure out a non-urea solution for the 710... can anyone confirm that? I'm not sure (not part of the industry)... Even with EGR, DOC and DPF, it seems that UP 9900 failed to meet Tier IV standards. An article on it is at the bottom of this post. The fact that it...

In agreement. The EPA Emissions Useful Life is also 10 years or 33,750MW-hours, whichever comes first.

The Caterpillar C175 seems to be the engine of the future for EMD. The F125 will use it, and Vossloh in Europe has begun to transition from their 710 powered EuroSprinter series to their Eurolight series that uses the C175. I have read elsewhere that the C175 does require urea after treatment to rea...
