Re: NEC now Fixed Seating Including Rear-Facing

You don't ride in planes, cars or buses backwards...why should a train be any different? I highly doubt anyone was ever excited to find out that half of the seats in their train now face the wrong way, no matter where or when it was implemented. I don't know about you but the railroad.net managemen...

Funny you mention that - it might be cost prohibitive to make them into EMU's as there are entirely new trucks and such required. But conventional trains were a good idea for longer runs such as Gilroy at Caltrains and if Metra were to electrify the Rock, anything past Blue Island. Or you could use ...

Please excuse if this has already been discussed, but where do the Caltrain gallery cars go when the electrics are fully commissioned and in use?

I don't think they have much of indoor shops with a paint booth there, so perhaps they sent the cars out or cycled them through somewhere like Mid America Car or Metro East when they were bought? Not really sure. I've heard the process for stripping and painting stainless was a PITA when IC and Nort...

So it was explained to me that the South Shore Line quit add/drop in Michigan City because the air brake tests significantly changed and the additional time incurred adding cars was not worth it compared to the 40 minute run of the shorter train to the east. This was perhaps 2005 or so? This is a bi...

Interesting that, of all places to use top-and-tail motors, they have the NEC. Where there are like four grade crossings. Wouldn't that be the best place to use a cab car where cars can't go around gates?

It seems unlikely that there is even demand on every train during the day , yet they all are the same consist. The question is wether the cost of changing consist lenght is worth the extra ticket revenue that a longer consist would bring , or the savings in running costs of running a shorter consis...

No way would they give the fluted sided cars a “wrap” repaint like what the smoothsided AIRO trainsets are getting. Lest we forget… the railroads painted stainless. IMG_4776.jpeg Same thing at the Grand Canyon. Their entire stainless fleet has been painted in platinum mist. Bit of a mystery as they...

Orrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr...

They are moving cars around to better utilize them, or robbing peter to pay paul.

lensovet wrote: Mon Mar 11, 2024 2:44 pm Must be why we have sold out trains all the time, because of that crappy service.
Good Lord this is such a false equivalency. As if restricted coaching stock and artificially low prices don't affect that.

Lots of good points made here. 1. Houston has like five downtowns and 4-5 exurbs that are cities unto themselves. Where do you terminate this? The real downtown? Galleria? Medical district? Hobby? IAH? Energy Corridor? Katy? Conroe? Woodlands? If this were Chicago or New York, "downtown" w...

I was fortunate in 2022 to have two trips to that area. On a lark I drove over Donner, found the Zephyr, had dinner in Tahoe, and back down the mountains throug Keddie and Portola.

Absolutely awesome. Loved every minute.

Banana + Cab =....

Abacab?

They already have a "Genesis". Maybe it's time for an "Abacab".

I'll see myself out.

I would love a business class seat if it wasn't a coach seat with a free drink. I was fully expecting Business Class on they Pennsylvanian to be 2+1 seating, not coach 2+2 seating. No, it's expensive 2+2 seating with a free drink. This. The 2+1 on the Detroit trains is nice seating, but occasionall...
