K,
Yes there was a lot of sand mined other than Woodmansie. The areas North and South of Lakehurst had huge sand mines. There were more near Chatsworth. I only mentioned Woodmansie because it is still active. (but not currently rail-served)

The issues in Lakewood started beginning in the late 90s when Brooklyn began migrating to Northern Ocean and Southern Monmouth Counties. As a 30 year resident of Howell I saw the entire area change. George Gould would never recognize the town he commuted from today to his CNJ office on his railroad....
AFAIK the sand ttrains from Woodmansie did not start until about 1980. (give or take) I only remember seeing covered hoppers on the unit sand trains. I lived on Maxim Road from 82-92 and saw quite a few of them. The JS-1 & SJ-2 were mixed freight. By the late 60s the little freight interchange a...

Going back to the Gold Lumber discussion, here’s how bad the track was in the mid 2000s. Notice the plow hitting the dirt, it was that bad!!! https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230719/ca2a0b9b27a3c89577912701039e1e9c.jpg As another poster has noted this is not the Gold Lumber siding but is the FIT....
John from Jersey, Yes a passenger train from Ocean County will be slower than driving, but much less stress. I commuted (via auto) from Howell to Livingston for 18 years. If there had been a way to use transit I would have done it to get off the highways. I firmly believe the Toms River Park & R...
Seeing all the talk about the TRIT being history is interesting. The State just replaced the crossing at Bimini Road. And it has not seen a train since about 2005.
